In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Very Good. First Edition. A fine-looking, stated First Edition exemplar of a collection of the English engraver-extraordinaire's final essays, and with a Preface by his widow, Mary Gill. Bound in blue linen cloth over boards, silver lettering to spine, device to front cover. Printed, illustrated paper dust jacket, little worn, a bit rubbed, protected by a plastic coat. Machine-, but not price-clipped, front and rear. Two black-and-white wood engravings, the first at frontis, being of a Madonna and Child, and the second, at the final page, of a Christmas Stag, with Latin inscription. The volume was published just posthumously following Gill's death in November of 1940. The woodcuts bookend the essays tie together essays some of which hadn't previously appeared, to wit: "Art," "Work," "Private Property," "Education for What?," "Peace and Poverty," "Art in Education," "Five Hundred Years of Printing," "The Leisure State," and "Secular and Sacred in Modern Industry." His admirers take them to be prophetic of Europe's descent into World War Two and the horrors of unregulated capitalism. Born in 1882, in Brighton, Sussex, dead by 1940, in Uxbridge, Middlesex, Eric Gill was a manifold genius in multiple media, from engraving to typographic design, lettering and typefaces, sculpture, and even stone carving. Gill was also controversial for his private life abuses of people and animals, including sexual including incest and sexual assault, most being unknown to friends and family until Fiona McCarthy's scathing biography of him, published in 1989. Mary Gill's uber-brief Preface here is important for the rarity of her public expressions, though it appeals to the working craftsmen of England more than to historical legacy. [6], 7-93 pp.Member, I.O.B.A., C.B.A., and adherent to the highest ethical standards. Additional postage may be required for oversize or especially heavy volumes, and for sets.…
