Gill ', caricatured the influential poet Gau- tier as an egg shaped snuff box with the crease of the join of the lid slitting his mouth. He is depicted as a ?pantoufleur' in Oriental slippers and a sleeping cap with 'Regrets Eternel'' across the brim, 'Tabac Du Levant' on his trousers and his Chibouk full of tobacco resting on the floor beside him. A build- ing, perhaps the Panthe?on, is sketched in the background. The publication it is taken from is one of Gill's most famous caricatures from his satirical journal ?Eclipse' . Gill went mad and died in Char- enton, the same asylum as Sade. 243825.
