Blue cloth with orange letters on the front cover and the spine and with a vignette in orange, blue and green of a camp site beside a lake complete with several tents and a fire. Binding signed "S". Just touches of wear to extremities, a faint rubbed spot at lower left of front cover, all illustrations present and in fine condition, previous owner's bookplate on front free endpaper [Manilla ? Silliman], else near fine to fine with no internal markings. No dust jacket. Born in Peacharm, Vermont, Beth Bradford Gilchrist [1879-1957] was an American author who wrote numerous juvenile books [The Life of Mary Lyon (1910), the Helen series (1912-1915), Trails' End (1925), Cinderella's Grandaughter, The Camerons of Highbord, etc.] and wrote for St. Nicholas Magazine and also for Youth's Companion Under the pen name "John Preston Earl" she also wrote a series of boys' prep-school stories. Charles Mark Relyea [1863-1932] was an American illustrator whose work appeared in magazines and popular novels in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, e.g. St. Nicholas Magazine. A native of Albany, New York, Relyea studied art under Thomas Eakins at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and under Frank Vincent DuMond at the Art Students League in New York City before completing his training in Paris. The volume offered here is dedicated as follows: "To girls who love camps and camping."
