Hardcover. Limited Edition #1352/1500. Quarto, xvi, 363 pages. In Very Good condition. Bound in publisher's decorated brown cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine. Mild fraying and wear along extremities. Rubbing to embossed gilt design on front board. Top edge of textblock speckled. 5 full black-and-white illustrated plates with 12 illustrations on yellow slips and 8 on blue slips tipped-in. Signed by Matisse and eumerated on limitation page in rear. Shelved in Show Case. Joyce's "Ulysses" was originally published in 1922. The title evokes parallels to Homer's epic poem, "Odyssey," as Ulysses is the Latinised name of its hero, Odysseus. Mattise's illustrative etchings for this special edition of "Ulysses" were based on the "Odyssey," as he had apparently not read Joyce's novel either in English or in the French translation. Although publisher George Macy may have had concernes, "Joyce consented to Matisse's approach over the telephone, the sole direct contact that transpired between artist and author" (Source: The Morgan Library & Museum). 1409567.
