Zustand: Very good overall. A price list for the native and exotic ferns owned by J. Warren Merrill, a prominent Massachusetts politician (1819 - 1889) who served as Mayor of Cambridge, and who owned an extensive garden cared for by gardener Avery B. Gilbert. The 'Note' states that the rare native ferns were collected in California, Colorado, Florida, and other southern states. In addition, Merrill desired to enlarge his collection of ferns "by exchanges" and wanted to establish an informal network of fern collectors. The names of the ferns were derived from Hooker's and Baker's Synopsis (1874 ed) and native varieties from Ferns of North America by Prof. D. C. Eaton. 8vo, pamphlet, 19pp. Paper wrappers, title in black at front wrapper. Slight vertical crease; crescent damp mark.
