These gases allow the solar radiation of shorter wavelength to pass through downwards through the atmosphere heating the earth surface, but CHG do not allow the infrared radiation of longer wavelength emanated by the earth to pass through. Resultantly, the captured heat warms up the earth and the atmosphere. This phenomenon of warming is similar to unduced heating in the horticultural greenhouse where the heat is entrapped inside the glass wall of greenhouse. Thus the polluting gases in the atmosphere are called Green House Gases (GHG). The principal GHGs are carbon dioxide (CO), methane (CH), CFC Chlorofluorocarbon and nitrous oxide (N2O) etc. Generally speaking global temperature rise should affect the quality of rainfall, duration of rainfall and timing of rainfall, upsetting agricultural production schedule and even productivity, glacial melting and rise of sea level, occurrence of storm and possibly other geological and meteorological phenomena. But the effect of the global warming will not be uniform, some countries will have more rainfall and other countries will suffer from intense aridity and long-term fear of desertification. Most of the nations will be losers in one way or the other and therefore the potential loser nations will wish to prevent global warming, which can be achieved mainly by reduction of emission of GHG.

Agricultural extension plays an important role in boosting agricultural productivity, increasing food security, improving rural livelihoods and promoting agriculture as an engine of pro-poor economic growth. Over the time, it has also mended itself as a crucial system that provides support services to rural producers meeting the new challenges confronting agriculture like climate change, marketing and other associated attributes. The very genesis of agricultural extension, followed by its transformation for the upliftment of farming community needs a systematic deliberation to understand the multifarious role played by this discipline. Accordingly, this book has incorporated almost all the changes taken place over a period of time for bringing visible changes in agriculture, animal husbandry and fishery in a systemic manner for the students and professionals associated with agriculture and rural development activities. This book has also highlighted the areas like women empowerment, agribusiness development for the rural youths and other significant arena closely linked with the dream of Atmanirbhar Bharat. Various strategies have also been suggested to make agriculture extension as the driver of agriculture development with the use of advanced ICT tools that may go a long way towards achieving the goal of self-reliant India through agriculture and allied sectors.
