Soft cover. Zustand: New. In 2005, after considerable campaigning by women's groups, the Indian government brought in an important new law, the Protection of Women from Domestic Violence Act (PWDVA). A civil law, the PWDVA was meant to combat violence against women in familial and intimate spaces. In The Violent Domestic, the authors ask: how effective has this law been? Have there been any changes in institutional regimes and their politics as a result of this legislation? They look at seven districts of West Bengal and interrogate, through the testimonies of survivors, whether the law reshapes the domestic, or whether the embeddedness of violence in the domestic is so complete that change through law must necessarily be partial and imperfect. Importantly, the questions the authors ask go beyond the heteronormative approach that centres only the married woman in the discourse around domestic violence. They include the voices of lesbian and transgender women, as well as women with physical and psycho-social disabilities. Given these unique insights, The Violent Domestic will be a welcome addition to legal and gender studies.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. This book explores the intersections of gender and disability. Situating disabled women in their local contexts and using an ethnographic approach, it provides a review of empirical literature on disabled women, both globally and in India. It seeks, hence, to illustrate how globally gendered structures influence practices of gender and ability in specific communities. The lives of disabled women remain entrenched in gendered regimes within families, communities and public spaces, though the agency demonstrated by these women in defining themselves as women and negotiating gendered spaces is remarkable. Keeping this in mind, this book steers a balance between a sound academic understanding of the issues of gender and disability and the involved care of a feminist disability activist.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Pratyaha is the Sanskritized Bengali word for 'everyday' for everybody. The neglect of everyday lifeworlds is due to a taken-for-granted belief that the realm of everyday is the site for common sense and the common place, the very well known, perhaps even the trivial. It is our sense of familiarity with routine relations and their sheer temporariness which casualizes our attitude towards our daily lived existence. True to the specific genre of critical everyday studies, the focus is on the dilemmas, contestations and negotiations between the self and the other, the 'normal' and the 'unusual', the sacral and the secular, and the explicit and the enigmatic. As usual, numerous actants play critical roles. In many of these reconstructions, women with different degrees of agency and powerlessness stand out as protagonists in the everyday dialectics, inescapably embedded in micro-structures and processes. Through a wide range of analytical modes, like narrative analysis, deconstructions of autobiographies, novels and children's stories, use of index numbers, ethnography, and interpretation of myths, this multidisciplinary volume explores a variety of everyday intimacies and estrangements in different institutional settings in the everyday lifeworlds, mainly of the contemporary urban Indian middle class across Islamic, Christian and Hindu frames of living.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. 1st Edition. Explores the art of little-known artist Meera Mukherjee -Featuring excerpts from her diaries and letters as well as essays by various scholars Choosing bronze as her favorite medium, Meera Mukherjee (1923-1998) formed her own simplistic, modernist, life-like world of sculptures. They possess a 'lifeforce' that speaks to the ordinary being instead of alienating them. Mukherjee's commitment to her practice made her valiant enough to step out of her comfort zone and dedicate herself to visual arts. Her devotion to the craft traditions of India guided her to Madhya Pradesh, Bengal and South India. The artist's language is similar to that of the quotidian life in her immediate surroundings, shedding light upon social issues. This one of a kind volume offers an understanding of Mukherjee's art through the most comprehensive collection of essays by writers who have known her personally and professionally, as well as from translated texts and excerpts from her diary and letters. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -This book discusses the multifaceted concept of disability in the context of India. Through analyses of theoretical propositions of disability in South Asia and empirical explorations of the lives of persons with disabilities in India, this book not only brings to the forefront a hitherto unexplored realm in academic discourse, but also bridges the gap between theory and lived reality, and between policy and practice. Thus, it is an important addition to the field of development studies in South Asia. The papers herein represent multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary perspectives from architects, lawyers, sociologists, political scientists, historians, economists and linguists to social work practitioners from the grassroots level. This range of insights from different disciplines allows for the exploration of a wide range of issues around disability and the lives of disabled people, moving from theoretical assumptions to exploring structural and infrastructural barriers, to problematizing different aspects of the lives of disabled people, and from objective realms to more subjective domains. Along with students and researchers of disability studies, this book is of interest to a diverse readership encompassing the social sciences, mental health, and development studies.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 212 pp. Englisch.
