Gerhard's academic background was in philosophy and theology, with a brief period of medical study. Gerhard later went on to the superintendency of Heldburg, during which he became more involved in practical ecclesiastical work, inclusive of which was his role as the senior theological professor at Jena. Alongside Johann Major and Johann Himmel, he formed the 'Tria Johannea' and was regarded by his contemporaries as one of the greatest theologians of Protestant Germany, offering advice and religious information to both scholars and the general public. Gerhard's literary legacy is numerous and extensive, and encompass polemical, dogmatic and more practical theology. Locorum Theologicorum is considered to be the standard compendium of Lutheran orthodoxy, with the extensive work covering the vast doctrinal nature of Lutheranism, including the proper understanding and interpretation of scripture and Lutheran beliefs regarding eschatology (the theology of death). The detailed work addresses the denomination with reference to Church fathers, Catholicism, Calvinism and of course, the writings of Luther. The work remains a classic of Lutheran theology and is credited for its skill and precision. The works are still referenced in contemporary scholarship and offer an important and detailed understanding of the complexities of the Lutheran faith. A very scarce and extremely influential work by a noted Lutheran scholar, offering an in depth insight into the intricacies of Lutheranism, complete in ten volumes, bound across four. In contemporary full calf. Externally worn with rubbing to the extremities, spine and boards. Backstrip lifting with some loss. Joints held by cords only to all volumes and may detach with further handling. Bookplate to front pastedown of all volumes. Evidence of worming to boards of all volumes.
