Boudoir size cabinet cards, albumen images on the photographer's mounts. Wounded Knee was the last of the major conflicts with the Sioux and the effectual end to the Indian Wars. "Long a marker of the end of the Indian wars and the close of the frontier era, the massacre at Wounded Knee holds a prominent position within western history and popular consciousness" (Klein). On the morning of December 29, 1890 the U.S. 7th Cavalry attempted to disarm a band of Lakota Sioux whom they had rounded up the previous day over concerns about participation in the messianic movement, the Ghost Dance - seen as a resistance to assimilation and the reservation system and act of self-determination. Tensions with the Sioux had been mounting for months over the loss of reservation land, displeasure with a new Indian agent, and fears of the Ghost Dance. In the process of disarming the Lakota, a gun went off and the cavalry opened fire with Hotchkiss guns, murdering about 300 Sioux, most of them women and children. Trager, a German immigrant, had arrived in America in 1876, opening his first photography studio in Wisconsin. In 1890, he opened a studio in Nebraska, selling landscapes and portraits to those traveling to the gold fields, and began photographing among the Sioux at the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Trager was among the first to photograph the scene after the massacre, along with Clarence Grant Morledge of the Omaha World-Herald. In the wake of the massacre, they captured hundreds of images of the dead and captured and returned to Chadron, Nebraska to print and market the images as the American Indian's last stand. To do so Trager formed the Northwestern Photographic Company with a partner, Joe Ford, and Morledge would eventually sell his negatives to the new company. Trager would advertise over 200 views of the Indian unrest. "Trager played a crucial role in the mass marketing and distribution of Wounded Knee images, handling Morledge's vast out-put as well as his own. He also took the only photographs that preserved the bloody aftermath of the battle" (Klein). Although the images initially sold well, by the end of 1891 and by the following year Trager would evidently close his studio. The present group includes a lovely standing portrait of Oglala Chief Crazy Bear, i.e. Mato Gnaskiyan, wearing what purports to be a Ghost Dance suit. The image, however, had been taken the previous summer at Pine Ridge and, in actuality, had nothing to do with Wounded Knee or the Ghost Dance. The other images comprise studio portraits of Chief Stinking Bear and Chief Hollow Wood, as well as an outdoor view of the three chiefs on horseback. "Over the years the pictures these photographers made to satisfy the needs of the moment drifted into museums and historical societies, separated from the stream of events that caused them to be. The photographs of Pine Ridge ceased to be pictures of the 'seat of war' as the reporters called it. Rather, they evolved into glimpses of reservation life . Separated from the immediacy of the incident that caused their creation, their significance dimmed with the passing of time" (Jensen, et. al., p.39). Taken together with images by other photographers, the photographs by Trager and Morledge established "our collective visual memory of the tragedy at Wounded Knee" (ibid., p. 60). Original negatives by Trager are housed in at the Nebraska State Historical Society and the Denver Public Library. Jensen, Paul and Carter, Eyewitness at Wounded Knee (1991). Klein, Christina.
