The name Harry Libbey is printed in gold on bottom of spine, suggesting possible book ownership. Harry Libbey was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Virginia's 2nd District from 1883-1887. Binding good and tight. Pages clean and square. Overall, this book is in very good condition.

This volume contains the Senate cases from 1789 to December 1885, containing not only contested cases, but all cases in which the right to a seat of any persone who had presented credentials had been questioned and for which the Senate had deemed proper to investigate or to discuss the question. Rare original autograph album containing nearly 200 signed letters, notes, and responses addressed to Thomas D. Neelands, longtime President of the Canadian Club of New York. Quarto, bound in full linen with titles stamped in black to the front panel, "Canadian Club of New York Thos. D. Neelands." The interior features tipped-in letters-typed and handwritten on a wide range of letterhead, from The White House to private businesses, law firms, and publications. The collection spans from 1914 to 1919, capturing the peak years of World War I and U.S. engagement with Canadian and Allied affairs.   The album is highlighted by a typed letter signed by Theodore Roosevelt on letterhead from The Metropolitan Magazine, January 16, 1917, and reads in full, "My dear Mr. Neelands: You are most kind. I rarely read the New York Times, and did not know that it had misquoted me. I wish I could accept your invitation to dinner, but it is a simple impossibility. In the Metropolitan that is out in a fortnight hence, there is an article by me about Canada, and her share in the war. Sincerely yours, Theodore Roosevelt."   Other especially notable signers include: William H. Taft, John D. Rockefeller Jr., Elihu Root, Chauncey Depew, Henry Cabot Lodge, George W. Goethals, Leonard Wood, George Dewey, Nelson Miles, Henry L. Written on United States Circuit Court of Appeals letterhead, [2pp], previously folded. Letter dated August 22, 1898. Accompanied by the original transmittal envelope, hand-addressed by Taft. Includes JSA Letter of Authenticity. A fine piece. Partial Transcription: "Aug. 22/98. Please send to me at once all of the Harvard and our examination papers which you can find. I have returned the proof of the new announcement to Anderson and have directed him to print 2000 instead of one. When he delivers them, tell Robert + Grooms that I wish them to enclose one by mail to each of the two classes who will return next year and to each member of the faculty. Also send our regular circular and this new announcement in answer to every letter of inquiry. When the regular circular has already been sent to an address, let it be followed by this new announcement. I have received the Gray's cases which came very promptly. I enclose the two requisitions signed as requested. I do not think I shall have the examination papers printed for the fall examinations - They can be typewritten and manifolded. INSCRIBED and SIGNED on the front endpaper: "For my friend James Scott/with many pleasant associations/golf and otherwise/Wm. H. Taft/Sept. 9th, 1919/Pointe-au-Pic." The recipient of the inscription might be James Scott Kemper, a personal friend and confidante of Taft as well as Herbert Hoover and who served as Ambassador to Brazil under Dwight Eisenhower. In any case, a scarce book, rarely found signed. Owner blindstamp on the last page which has the publisher's imprint. Near Fine, lacking a dustwrapper.

Zustand: Very Good. 13 (largely uniform) partially printed documents consecutively dated between 1882 and 1894, appointing Edward Newton a Notary Public, and each signed by a Rhode Island Governor. Old folds as docketed, small holes in upper corners where the documents were posted, else very good or better. The documents are signed by Governors Alfred H. Littlefield, Augustus O. Bourn (2), George Peabody Wetmore (2), John W. Davis (2), Royal C. Taft, Herbert W. Ladd (2), and D. Russell Brown (4). Each doucument is countersigned by the Rhode Island Secretary of State and is notarized by another Notary Public. Image shows one document.
