El primero consiste en estudiar las operaciones del II SS-Panzerkorps y del III Panzerkorps durante tres importantes batallas que tuvieron lugar en el sur de Ucrania en el sector del Heeresgruppe Süd entre el 5 de julio de 1943 y finales de agosto de ese mismo año. Estas tres batallas son los combates del 12 al 17 de julio en los alrededores de Prochorovka, la defensa del río Mius por el 6º Armee del General der Infanterie Karl Hollidt y los combates del III Panzerkorps en el sector de Bogodukhov durante la cuarta batalla de Kharkov. Estas tres batallas son acontecimientos estrechamente relacionados durante el verano de 1943, y dicha relación supone un complejo entramado de planificación estratégica tanto de alemanes como de soviéticos, de duros combates, sangrientas batallas, engaños rusos y de decisiones tomadas por Adolf Hitler. La batalla del Mius es bastante desconocida, y los combates por Bugodukhov son tratados de manera somera en la mayoría de los textos. La más famosa de las tres, Prochorovka, ha sido extensamente mitificada.
