First edition. 164pp., and many black and white illustrations, both within the text and full-page, by Ian MacInnes. George Mackay Brown (1921-1996) was a Scottish poet, author and dramatist, whose work has a distinctly Orcadian character. He is considered one of the great Scottish poets of the 20th century. This collection of stories from legends of Orkney is his first book for younger readers. The book is bound in the original grey-blue paper covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean and the book has been flatsigned "George Mackay Brown" on the title page. There is a small brown stain on the fore edge of the front free endpaper and following page with a very small mark on the fore edge of the title page. There is an inscripiton dated 1976 on the front free endpaper ("to Alan, from Rognvald, Christine, Eleanor & Eric. 1976". The clipped dustwrapper is also very good with light shelf wear and some rubbing along the top edge. The spine ends and top corners are bumped. Flat Signed by the Author.
