The tales are told in the semi-sacred space of the patio (backyard) of homes as part of the funerary ritual that includes other aesth…etic and expressive practices such as jokes, song games, board games, and prayer. In this volume these stories are situated within their performance contexts and represent a highly ritualized corpus of oral knowledge that for centuries has been preserved and cultivated by African-descendant populations in the Americas.Ethnomusicologist George List collected these tales throughout his decades-long fieldwork amongst the rural costenos, a chiefly African-descendent population, in the mid-20th century and, with the help of a research team, transcribed and translated them into English before his death in 2008. In this volume, John Holmes McDowell and Juan Sebastian Rojas E. have worked to bring this previously unpublished manuscript to light, providing commentary on the transcriptions and translations, additional cultural context through a new introduction, and further typological and cultural analysis by Hasan M. El-Shamy. Supplementing the transcribed and translated texts are links to the original Spanish recordings of the stories, allowing readers to follow along and experience the traditional telling of the tales for themselves.

This 1936 edition contains 120 striking photographs reproduced in heliogravure, and taken by the following photographers: Gaston Paris; George Hurrel; John Somerset Murray; Marcel Bovis; Mitsutaro Fuku; Kardas; Maurice Tabard; Harry Meerson; Herbert List; Hein Gorny; Cecil Beaton; Pierre Boucher; Thérèse Le Prat; George Platt Lynes; Erwin Blumenfeld; Willy Prager; Marianne Breslauer; Lucien Vogel; Bill Brandt; Chin San Long (Lang Jingshan), and many others. Minor shelf wear. Tip of lower front corner slightly bumped, thus slightly affecting pages throughout. Text and captions in French. Contemporary decorative panelled calf; lower spine strengthened. A rich source of information on contemporary horticultural practice, and garden design much influenced by French models. London and Wise owned the celebrated Brompton Park nursery from circa 1688 to 1714, and supplied most of the large estates with plants and trees; the nursery was highly recommended by John Evelyn. Wise was 'master gardener'to Queen Anne, whilst London travelled the country giving advice on gardens including Chatsworth, Longleat and Castle Howard. The present work is advertised as a translation of two French works (those of François Gentil and Louis Liger) but with 'several alterations and additions proper for our English culture'. This second edition revised by Joseph Carpenter who became a partner in the nursery in 1714, gives more details of English practice, tree-planting schemes and fruit preferences than the first published 1706 edition, and is considered of more use to the real gardener. There is a list of fruits and catalogue of seeds available at the Brompton nursery. Among the attractive plates are several of parterres, allées and garden layouts with topiary and fountains; arbours and covered walks are illustrated in an elm-entwined portico and a 'gallery'of hornbeam (the text notes that the English would use lime).
