Hardcover. Zustand: Poor. The Whole Genuine and Complete Works of Flavius Josephus The Learned and Authentic Jewish Historian and Celebrated Warrior Containing [lots of things] Translated from the Original in the Greek Language To which is added Various Useful Indexes Also a continuation of the History of the Jews By George Henry Maynard Embellished with Sixty beautiful engravings, taken from original drawings and engraved by American Artists. New York. Printed and sold by William Durell, at his Book Shop. No 208 Pearl Street near the Fly-Market. MDCCXCIV [1794] Folio. 723 pages. Full leather binding. Front cover and the first 60 pages are detached from the text block (but firmly attached to each other). Pages 61-70 (the sixth signature) are detached. Text block solid form pages 71-678. Then the 57th signature is loose. Pages 687-724 are firmly attached to the back cover, but detached from the text block. Pages are faded and foxed. Some more than others, as it was printed on different quality papers. Overall dimensions are 11 x 17 x 3 inches. Covers are worn and scuffed with evidence of early resewing along the spine. Original spine and spine label present, but chipped. The title page is tattered and torn, with some missing pieces but scarcely affecting the text. The frontispiece engraving is even more ragged, but on the back of it is the ownership name, Geo Allen and below that, Norfolk. Allen s name appears signed elsewhere in the book as well. The title page calls for 60 engravings. This copy has 22 of them. They are large, full page, engravings of historical scenes. Many seem to involve people being stabbed. There is a nice Parting of the Red Sea. The works of Josephus in 20 books. Each book has a decorative header, with a bird holding up a garland, with the assistance of flanking cherubs. The title The American Edition of Josephus 1792 appears in an oval on each of these decorative headers. It is an unusual amount of decoration for an American imprint. The full page engravings are unusual for an American book of this period as well. Joseph was a first century scholar, a Jewish Roman, whose records of Jewish history has been of continued interest to historian and theologians since the Renaissance. It was first translated into English in 1602. I can find no earlier US edition than the 1792 Durell edition; this is the 1794 edition. Please email with questions or to request photos. If you see a photo beside this listing, please be aware that it's an ABE Stock Photo (whatever that is) and not a photo of this book.

Hardcover. Zustand: Fair. Folio hardcover. Measures 10.5 x 16.5 inches. Bound in full leather now considerably scuffed and edgeworn, befitting a 200 year old American binding. Spine leather all but gone. Front cover detached but present. Frontispiece engraving detached but present. Title page detached as well, but set in place. Both of those pages have some chipping at the edges. The rest of the text block is tightly sewn, but in two sections -- pages 1-153 are in one block and 153 to 723 in another. Also at the rear are the instructions to the binder for the 60 plates & then 3 pages of Subscribers names (one of those pages is just Subscribers in Baltimore). All 60 plates are present and in the proper place. The folding map of Jerusalem has some tears and crinkles. Normal fading and foxing to pages and plates. All the plates say 'Engraved for the American edition.' This is the most extensively illustrated eighteenth century American book I can remember seeing. Text in double columns. Baltimore was never a publishing center in the United States. Books from Pechin's press are scarce - he published an edition of Jefferson's Notes on the state of Virginia in 1800. I cannot find anything published earlier than this volume - which would be a stupendous first effort by a young printer. Please email with questions or to request photos. This is a heavy book, so some extra shipping will be required.

Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. New-York: Printed and Sold by William Durell, at his Book Store and Printing Office, No. 19, Queen-Street, Near the Fly Market, 1792-1794. First American Edition. Folio. 723pp.; directions to the binder; [2]pp. list of subscribers; 57 plates; 3 maps, including fold-out of Jerusalem, collated complete. Bound in full modern speckled calf; six raised bands; original red morocco label laid to spine; new endpapers. Tight in binding; marginal staining and spotting; Very Good in a handsome binding. The Maynard Josephus is not only a fascinating illustrated tour of the ancient world, but, per Sabin, it is "worthy of notice for the specimens of early engraving in the United States." Tiebout and Anderson, the latter responsible for the fold-out map of Jerusalem in this volume, were barely 20 years old at the time. An impressive and striking production. Sabin 3666; Evans 27174.
