New York, C.S. Francis & Co., 1849. 8°. pp. (VI) + (II), 9-175 + (III), 7-187 + (III) 9-165 + (IV). Pictorial title-page, portrait frontispiece, 2 wood-engraved plates and decorated initials. Original dark green cloth prettily panelled and blocked in blind to both boards and enclosing a neat gilt vignette to upper cover, spine elaborately and florally gilt, all edges gilt; Very good plus copy. Internally tight and clean with 6 leaves affected by marginal staining; with a neat pencil inscription to front blank: "Hannah W. Jackson from Aunt Mary November 9th 1848". - First collected American edition containing Andersen's tales to 1847. A comprehensive edition containing a memoir of Hans Andersen by Mary Howitt and 26 tales, including the several parts of 'The Shoes of Fortune' and 'The Snow Queen'. This copy a gift of George F. Getty II to the Hans Christian Andersen Museum at Lerchenborg (near Kalundborg) in Denmark, following his visit to the town. The book is sold with his accompanying autograph letter (1-page), in stamped and franked envelope, on embossed notepaper from 4201 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles 5, California and dated September 26 1961. It thanks the recipient "My dear Countess Louise" (Countess Louise Lerche-Lerchenborg) for her hospitality and explains that the date of the book will indicate for how long Andersen's tales have been held in affectionate regard in the United States. The book is housed in a cardboard box with notes written in ink to indicate, presumably in the hand of a curator at the museum, that the book was a gift from Getty and that it is signed by Mary Howitt - although this claim is unsubstantiated. The neat inscription in pencil to the front blank of the book appears in a generic mid-Victorian hand which may, or may not, be that of the editor. - Also sold with an Autograph Letter Signed ("Mary Howitt"), 3pp. with integral address leaf to James Brown of Little Brown Publishers of Boston, with seal, sent from Lower Clapton and dated 2 December 1845, 8vo. with second leaf expertly and archivally window - mounted on cream conservation stock. In this letter Mary Howitt thanks the publisher for the Washington autograph and the additional surprise of Jared Sparks. She then expresses concern over the threat of war Britain and the United States: "I dread in myself who have so kindly a feeling towards America that change of mind which would come with war when I might triumph over your defeat or long to retaliate on you suffering we might be made to bear through you". She is referring to the on-going dispute over the territory of Oregon. The Anglo-American convention of 1818 had established joint occupation of the land. This pact had been renewed with the understanding that with a years notice the agreement could be terminated. Polk had made an inflammatory speech urging Congress to stiffen its claim to the whole territory and in May 1846 gave notice of the termination of the previously held agreement. The Anglo-American dispute was resolved with a treaty in June 1846 which established the boundary along the 49th parallel. Mary Howitt, (1799-1888), working alongside her husband, was a prolific author of books for children, writing or translating over 100 titels during her career. Her work 'Sketches of Natural History' (1834) contained her best-known poem '"Will you walk into my parlour?" said the Spider to the Fly.' She is remembered pricipally for her translations of the fairy stories of Hans Christian Andersen from the original Danish: a language she mastered while living in Heidelberg, Germany, with her family. The first such translation, 'Wonderful Stories for Children' (1846), introduced this Scandinavian author's work to the English-speaking public and was first of three translations into English to appear during that year. - George Franklin Getty was the only child of J. Paul Getty Sr.'s first marriage to Jeanne Tremont. He served as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of Getty Oil until his untimely death in 1973, aged only 48, from a drug overdose.
