Zustand: Fair. London: Printed for T. Osborne and J. Shipton, J. Hodges, B. Collins, and S. Crowder and H. Woodgate, 1756. Folio hardcover in brown leather. 706 double-column pages. Copper plate devices, charts, and portraits intermittently throughout. This is a fair binding copy, disbound, lacking spine and with boards detached. The boards have numerous scuffs and scrapes and the corners are quite frayed. A stamped lacy border to both boards is largely rubbed away but just visible by spine. Edges skinned and quite chipped. Each board has several large dark spots of unknown origin. Front free endpaper loose, rear free endpaper lacking. Numerous separations to text block. Two inked "4-" to front pastedown. There are three previous owner's inscriptions to the second front free endpaper: "Richard Smales // Aug't 27th 1797," "Fras Sr. Brooke // Sept 15 1786," and "Edith Cooper. // 1886," and the initials W.H. to top right corner of reverse of frontispiece. Very light soiling to front endpapers and age toning just to the edge of the outermost pages. 5 inch tear to bottom of frontispiece near gutter. Two charts missing - one of Great Britain (page 1) and one of Europe and Africa (page 292). Light pencil underlining and marginalia throughout, and at least one instance of blue pencil underlining. Quarter-inch dark spot to fore edge of pages 104-107. Three half-inch dark spots to pages 27-33, but inside generally clean and bright with supple paper. Inquire if you need further information.
