Untidy collection, discoloured with age and crudely mounted on leaves taken from autograph album, with cuttings pasted over parts of letters, etc. All three of Montagu's letters signed 'Ed S Montagu'. LETTER ONE (9 February 1915, 24 Queen Anne's Gate, S.W., one page, octavo): Is grateful for a letter and cutting. 'You and your newspaper have always been most helpful and friendly to me in my connection with Cambridgeshire.' LETTER TWO (23 December 1916, 24 Queen Anne's Gate, S.W., two pages, octavo): A long and important letter, casting light on relations between Asquith and Lloyd George. Illness has prevented his replying sooner. 'I had thought of making use of your generous offer and of explaining in the columns of your valuable paper why I am not a member of Government; but I have come to the conclusion that I will say nothing. After all, I do not wish to do the slightest thing to distract public attention in Cambridgeshire from the war. [.] | The old Government is now dead, and it is the duty of everyone to support the new one. [.] | My own belief, founded on many, many years of friendship both with the late [Asquith] and with the present Prime Minister [Lloyd George], is that no country ever had a better combination than the two men. I believe, too, that this combination would have continued uninterruptedly and successfully had it not been that each had friends, political and personal, who did not believe in the other and were continually pulling them apart. I believe that Asquith is the best Prime Minister this country could have, but, failing him, the present Prime Minister has my enthusiastic support, [.]'. LETTER THREE (15 October 1917, on embossed India Office letterhead, one page, quarto): Begins by apologising for not having time to grant Stuart an interview. 'It is quite true that my stay at Clifton was a record of permanent ill-health due to the fact that I was crammed to enter the school at 12 whereas the proper age was 13.' More biographical details follow. 'Before entering Parliament, but after I had been adopted as the prospective candidate for West Cambridgeshire, I read Law but was never called.' Yet more biographical details. Ends, 'I obtained an Exhibition in Biology at the University of London and the Gold Medal for the year [.]'. Black and white photograph, roughly six and a half inches by four, captioned 'Speech at Cambridge on Resignation from Office of Secretary of State for India. 1922.' Excellent image of Montagu addressing a rapt audience of constituents. LETTER FROM ASQUITH'S SECRETARY (24 November 1924, on embossed 10 Downing Street letterhead; one page, octavo): 'The Prime Minister desires me to thank you for letting him see the memoir of the late Mr. Montagu contained in the copy of the "Cambridge Daily News" which you sent him. He has read it with great interest.' Signed 'E. M. Watson'. Traces of press cutting adhering to bottom half of letter. LETTER FROM LLOYD GEORGE'S SECRETARY (26 November 1924, on embossed letterhead, 18 Abingdon Street, Westminster, S.W.1; one page, octavo): 'I am desired by Mr. Lloyd George to thank you very much for your letter of the 20th November and to say that he greatly appreciates your courtesy in sending him the page from the Cambridge "Press and News" of the 21st November containing your Memoir of the late Mr. Montagu. Mr. Lloyd George was very interested in reading this and is much obliged to you for letting him see it.' Signed 'F. L. Stevenson'. She enlists the help of a very busy doctor who, upon learning the artist is really a con-man with greedy tendencies, in faced with a dilemma: help the desperate wife by curing the artist, or tend to other patients in need? 8 x 10 inches. Weakened folds mainly repaired on reverse. A determined Redmond marches to the right of the picture, large green flag of 'IRISH INDEPENDENCE' over his right shoulder, in his left hand three chains, linked to the noses of Asquith (with 'HOME RULE' paper under his arm), Lloyd George (holding a 'BUDGET BILL') and Winston Churchill (carrying a 'HOME DEPARTMENT' paper), who follow submissively.

Zustand: Near Fine. Large collection of 170 World War I propaganda pamphlets, chiefly British, together with clippings and other ephemera. Many items bear complimentary slips of either Sir Gilbert Parker (a Canadian novelist who was tasked with molding elite US opinion for the British) or Professor William Macneile Dixon of the University of Glasgow, his assitant. Overall Near Fine condition with some age toning and minimal wear. A fascinating assortment that can be roughly divided into the following subsections: - 37 pamphlets addressing various aspects of the war, consisting mainly of open letters. These include pleas for neutral powers to commit themselves and protestations of Allied innocence. T.W. Rolleston explains why the English treatment of Ireland can in no way be compared to the Prussian treatment of Poland, and the Keeper of the Department of Coins and Medals at the British Museum offers a snide analysis of Germany's commemorative medals. - 29 pamphlets with a distinctly British focus, of which one, The Navy and the War, is a duplicate. Other titles include: How the British Blockade Works, The Character of the British Empire, and Why Mail Censorship is Vital to Britain. A Clear Peace: The War Aims of British Labour contains a statement issued jointly at the Inter-Allied Labour and Socialist Conference held in London in February 1918, and German Prisoners in Great Britain features photographs of well-cared-for prisoners of war playing ball, engaging in amateur theatricals, and tending to their gardens. - 22 bulletins, titled "Facts About the War" and published by the Paris Chamber of Commerce, of which 14 are still in partially opened envelopes addressed to Professor Arthur William Meyer at Stanford University and postmarked 1917 and 1918. - 19 miscellaneous items, including newspaper clippings, maps, a letter to the editor ("Supremacy of the British Soldier") by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and six letters (with one duplicate) sent by out the National Woman's Liberty Loan Committee to explain how the American public's money is being spent. The letters have some splits to the fold lines, and one sheet was torn in two so the verso could be used for a clothing list dated October 11, 1918. - 17 pamphlets published in the United States or promoting American involvement in the war, of which two (both related to 4th of July celebrations in London) are duplicates. Two are small booklets issued by the Committee on Public Information, titled The German Whisper and The Kaiser in America: One Hundred and One German Lies, which seek to persuade the reader that every false rumor or negative sentiment going around the country is the work of a German agent. Other items include Leading Opinions Both For and Against National Defense, self-published by the chemist and inventor Hudson Maxim (from the the family that produced the Maxim gun and Maxim silencer) and Reconstructing the Crippled Soldier, a Red Cross publication promoting the new prosthetics being created for disabled soldiers. - Eleven pamphlets denouncing German atrocities, of which one, The Black Slaves of Prussia, is a duplicate (the Anglican Bishop of Zanzibar expresses his touching concern that Africa will be enslaved to Germany -- at the time, most of the African continent was under French or British rule). Two pamphlets address the sinking of neutral or hospital ships, and one relatively mild booklet, Linguistic Oppression in the German Empire, recounts Prussian attempts to force ethnic minorities in outlying areas to adopt the German language. On the opposite end of the scale, Their Crimes is a classic of the genre, memorialized in textbooks today, which accuses German troops in Belgium of slaughtering children en masse and killing a headmaster for refusing to trample on his country's flag. - Ten pamphlets reproducing speeches by various leaders including H.H. Asquith, David Lloyd George, and General Smuts. - Eight pamphlets attempting to condemn the Germans in their own words, with titles.
