In den WarenkorbLeather. Zustand: Good. None (illustrator). First edition. A fascinating collection of four early eighteenth century publications about the history and structure of parliament, including two very scarce first editions from politician Richard West. The first work present is the very scarce first edition of Richard West's 'A Discourse Concerning Treasons, and Bills of Attainder', published in 1716. ESTC Citation No. T31938.West was an English barrister, judge, playwright and politician who sat in the House of Commons from 1721 to 1726, and later served as Lord Chancellor of Ireland. He was a successful pamphleteer, with this very scarce work amongst his most popular within his lifetime. He discusses the 'notion of treason' in British history - particularly amongst the Saxons and Normans - and a number of specific cases of treason. The second work present in this volume is the very scarce 1717 work 'Observations, rules and orders, collected out of divers journals of the House of Commons', discussing bills, elections of speakers, readings in the commons, and other parliamentary matters, during the reigns of Edward VI, Mary, Elizabeth, James I, Charles I, and Charles II.ESTC Citation No. T115752. Retaining the initial advertisement leaf. The third work in this volume is another first edition from Richard West - 'An Inquiry into the Manner of Creating Peers' - in which he discusses the means of manner of peer creation. The first edition of this work, published in 1719. A number of further editions were published in the same year. ESTC Citation No. T37253, retaining the original half title. The fourth and final work in this collection is the first edition of George St. Amand's very scarce 'Animadversions on the Enquiry into the Manner of Creating Peers', published in 1724. This serves as a direct response to West's aforementioned 1719 work on peer creation, and in an argumentative tone identifies factual inaccuracies within West's work.ESTC Citation No. T21908, retaining the original half title. With an attractive library bookplate, dated 1860, to the front pastedown, and a handwritten contents leaf to the front free endpaper. An excellent collection of four works, offering insight into the management of Parliament and the Commons in the early eighteenth century. In a full calf binding. Rubbing to back strip head and tail, and board perimeters. Joints starting, with boards firmly held. Inscription to head of fore edge of text block. Bookplate to front pastedown. Inscription to front free endpaper. Internally, firmly bound. Neat ink underlining to a number of leaves in first work, with pages otherwise generally clean and bright. Good. book.
