In den WarenkorbFirst edition. An educational epistolary novel about the life of young emigrés during the French Revolution - written the with first-hand experience of exile: Madame Genlis having lived a peripatetic life outside France since 1791. Dedicated to her grandchildren and aimed both at children and older readers, the novel opens with epigrams from Irish-born actor-playwright Arthur Murphy ('There are three things highly pernicious to the endearments of beauty. gaming, scandal and politics'.) and Voltaire ('C'est être un monstre, que de ne pas aimer ceux qui ont cultivé notre ame'). A 'Hambourg' edition appeared in the same year, and the book was published in English as The Young Exiles, or, Correspondence of some juvenile Emigrants the following year. 2 vols, 8vo (149 × 90 mm), pp. [i-ii], [2, the second numbered in error 'iv'], [iii]-viii, 404; [2], 430, complete, despite misnumbering and misbinding of 1 leaf 'Epitre dédicatoire à mes petits-enfans' after first title. Rather spotted. Early nineteenth-century quarter calf, gilt. Spines faded, but a good copy. [Cioranescu, 30621; Martin, Mylne & Frautschi, Bibliographie du genre romanesque français, 1751-1800, 98.44. Worldcat: University of Southern Mississippi].

In den WarenkorbFirst edition of Genlis' historical novel, full of overt analogies to the upheavals of the Revolution, written during Genlis' exile and offered as a sequel to Les Veillées du Château. It appeared in English in a translation by James Beresford as The Knights of the Swan in 1796 (printed for J. Johnson). A measure of its remarkable currency in the literature of the following century is provided by its cameo appearance in Tolstoy's War and Peace. On an occasion when Prince Andrew visited General Kutuzof, 'He found him reclining in an armchair, still in the same unbuttoned overcoat. He had in his hand a French book which he closed as Prince Andrew entered, marking the place with a knife. Prince Andrew saw by the cover that it was Les Chevaliers du Cygne by Madame de Genlis' (X, chapter 16). 8vo (200 × 121 mm), pp. xxiv, 381, [1]; [4], 406; [4], 434, complete with half-titles in vols. 2 & 3 as called for. Preliminaries slightly frayed at inner margins, a few spots and stains, the paper of indifferent quality. Contemporary quarter sheep, plain spines with labels lettered in gilt. [Cioranescu, 30617; Martin, Mylne & Frautschi, Bibliographie du genre romanesque français, 1751-1800, 95.20.].

In den Warenkorb2 vols. in 1, a little spotting and marginal damp-staining, first leaf of second vol. creased and the opening with a light stain (apparently from a bookmark), pp. [iv], [i], [v-] viii, 172; 204, 8vo, recased in the original green linen backed boards, spine faded, edges rubbed, later printed paper label on spine, good. The translator begins her preface (which is on an inserted leaf): 'The constant kindness with which for the last thirty years my works have been regarded by the public, and especially the favourable reception which it has deigned to give to this production of my pen, might have authorised me in not making in not making any alteration in this edition', and goes on to outline the changes. However we have not been able to locate any earlier edition. Nor have we been able to ascertain much about 'Miss Webb' (as she appears on the title-page). That she was connected with Oxford or Oxfordshire is obvious from the dedication to the county's MP, and the preponderance of Oxfordshire addresses for the subscribers. Otherwise we have drawn a blank. BL and Bodleian only in COPAC and WorldCat.
