In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: As New. Large octavo, un paginated, 62 pages of which 2 fold out pages + 23 photographic plates. Illustrated paper over boards. Mint. - First edition. Rubinowitz: And then the surgical intervention in the World Trade Center in New York City. Everything top secret and illegal of course. In days of conspiratorial work, somewhere on the 148th floor and using building site refuse they had tediously smuggled into the building under their pullovers, they constructed a functioning load-bearing balcony. In a long complicated process they scratched putty from the tall heavy window, which couldn't be opened. Then they extracted it using suction pads, shunted the balcony out, posed on it at 6 in the morning and had themselves photographed there from a helicopter for their nearest and dearest back home. They kept very mum about it all, because if word had crept out about their coup they could have been fined very heavily for sabotaging a national treasure. Even if it was built by the Japanese. Incidentally, as proof that they were there, there is now a piece of old chewing gum stuck to the outside of the building at a dizzy height. Moukhtar Kocache Director of Visual Art & Media: Dear Colleagues, The purpose of this letter is to categorically deny and refute Gelatin's (the Austrian art collective) preposterous claim to have removed a window and installed a balcony from the 91st floor of Tower 1 in the World Trade Center, while guests and in residence at World Views, LMCC's internationally acclaimed studio program. No one in his or her sane mind would believe such an account! Talk about this action has recently taken on plague proportion in the sensation driven and rumor hungry art world. Rumors and claims that are concocted by no one else but Gelatin's adolescent-like members. Anyone that is familiar with their work knows very well that these boys thrive on shock value and attention. They are pranksters in real life and often aim to introduce an element of doubt and disbelief in their art; they are in fact masters of deception and their real art for the program at the World Trade Center has been to fabricate this action and promulgate it as an urban myth.

In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: g+ to vg. Limited edition. 1/100. Folio (12 x 9 1/2"). 110, [2]pp. Original full brown cloth with white lettering to spine. Limitation page hand-numbered (No. 37/100). Book housed in its matching publisher's slipcase with b/w photographic reproduction pasted onto front cover. Completed in 1936 in Palestine, where Swiss Avant-Garde portrait photographer Helmar Lerski had immigrated in 1932, "Metamorphosis through Light" is a stunning 'tour de force' in which Lerski carried his talent to extremes. With the help of up to 16 mirrors and filters, he directed the natural light of the sun in constant new variations and refractions onto his model, the Bernese-born, at the time out-of-work draughtsman and light athlete Leo Uschatz. Thus he achieved, in a series of over 140 close-ups "hundreds of different faces, including that of a hero, a prophet, a peasant, a dying soldier, an old woman and a monk from one single original face" (Siegfried Kracauer in "Theory of Film," Oxford University Press, 1960, p. 162). According to Lerski, these pictures were intended to provide proof "that the lens does not have to be objective, that the photographer can, with the help of light, work freely, characterize freely, according to his inner face." Laid in at rear, inside a white envelope, is a splendid silver gelatin print (10 3/4 x 8 1/2") produced by German photographer André Gelpke from Helmar Lerski's original plate. The print depicts a close-up portrait of Leo Uschatz not featured in the book. The verso has been hand-captioned, numbered and signed by Gelpke. One of 100 copies, of which this is No. 37. Minor shelf wear and sporadic fraying along edges of slipcase. Head of spine slightly bumped (not affecting pages throughout). Text in German and English. Slipcase in overall good+, binding in good+ to very good, interior and silver gelating print in very good condition. About the author: Helmar Lerski (1871-1956) was born in Strasburg, then part of the German empire, as Israel Schmuklerski. His parents were Jewish immigrants of Polish origin. In 1876 the family moved to Zurich, Switzerland, where they obtained Swiss citizenship. Lerski moved to New York in 1893 at the age of twenty-two to work as an actor, changing his name in 1896. He spent several years with a German theatre company in Chicago and Milwaukee, where he met his first wife, a photographer. In 1911 Lerski began to experiment with photography by adapting dramatic stage lighting techniques to portrait photographs of fellow actors. In 1912, Lerski was encouraged to pursue a career in photography by Rudolph Dührkoop, who had come to St. Louis to demonstrate his photographic techniques. In 1914/15 he taught German language and literature at the University of Texas in Austin. In 1915, after more than twenty years in America, Lerski moved to Berlin, and after showing his portraits, was asked to become a cameraman at the UFA studios, where he worked as a cameraman and expert for special effects for many films, including Fritz Lang's movie Metropolis (1927). Lang wanted to insert the actors into shots of miniatures of skyscrapers and other buildings, so Lerski used specially made mirrors to create the illusion of actors interacting with huge, realistic-looking sets. With fascism on the rise, Lerski immigrated to Palestine where he worked as a director and cameraman for documentary films. After the war, Lerski moved back to Zurich, where he spent the rest of his life.

In den Warenkorb[China n.d. ca. 1899-1903]. A double-sided glass mirror, silver gelatin photo with oval view, superb and prinstine crisp image, absolutely no fading, mirror/glass 6 x 9 cm., image ca. 4 x 6 cm., slightly off center. V E R Y R A R E ! A very RARE example of early silver gelatin technique with the most remarkable preservation and results. . This stunning and very early image is over 112 years old, , the portrait of the "page boy" coiffure Chinese girl is marvelous. She wears a modern patterned "Chi-pao," a high-neck split dress which reveals her legs [though not shown], and also she sports a watch, ring and earrings with a serious but gentle pouting sail. . Her arms are folded in front of her and showing a lot of self-confidence. Her neck is completely covered by her tall collar which exhibits not one but two "frogs" or Chinese button-clasps. Her "Chi-pao" dress is of an 'earlier style' and her sleeves are about half-way up her forearm. . Her full lips and very straight nose give her a lot of elegance and charm. Her very rounded face shows some elegance. Her jet black bangs hang straight down without a single hair out of place, to her eyebrows which are hidden. An immaculate portrait of a charming and beautiful girl in her early twenties. * PHOTO TECHNIQUE: Silver gelatin type photographs of this vintage sandwiched between two sheets of glass seldom survive; most are invaded by the air, oxidized and destroyed. Others have broken glass, most are poor examples with defective images. * CONDITION: The two sheets of glass are intact and held together firmly. The image is oval and has survived any exposure to the outside air, but the exterior edges have some exposure, thus darkening the silver. The image is without any problems. It is strong, clear and not faded at all. This again is "REMARKABLE" vis-à-vis the fact that the large majority by now are damaged and defective. This is a RARE item in the very best of collector's condition. SUPERB EXAMPLE ! . THE VERSO: The back side shows where the encroachment of air has enter the edges. The interior shows a bit of discoloration, but again this is in the silver margin, not near or behind the image at all. ***.

All photos with period pencil or ink captions in French on recto or verso of the mounts; most photos with period ink or pencil numbers on the mounts; two photos dated â1905â on the mounts. Several images mildly faded or with mild silvering, several mounts with minor creases, small tears or chipping on the extremities, but overall a very good collection of interesting and unusual photos.Original large vernacular (not commercial) photos of Egypt taken by a French traveller in the early 20th century. Unlike most collections of Egyptian travel photos from this time, these ones donât cover ancient temples and sites but instead focus on the life of contemporary Arabic Egypt. Twenty-one photos depict Cairo and environs, showing the Nile with feluccas and buildings on the banks, narrow streets and shops of old Cairo, the gate to the Delta Barrage, Al-Rifaâi Mosque, mausoleums and tombs of the Mamluks in Cairo Necropolis, mud-brick buildings in Cairo environs, scenes with the local people, etc. Four photos show native mud-brick houses in Memphis and local people; two photos depict Muslim inhabitants of Ismailia and their huts made of dried grass. Eight photos show the beach at Attaka (modern-day Suez Governorate of Egypt), the Red Sea and steamers coming in or out of the Suez Canal, and a native camel rider portrayed near Attaka. Overall an unusual collection showing everyday life of Egypt in the early 20th century.
