In his introduction W.A.P. Martin ex-president of the Chinese Imperial University states that in 1910 Geil, "undertook the herculean task of visiting each of the several capitals of the Eighteen provinces; mapping out their sites, and collecting on the spot their topographical treasures - a mass of literature destined to form the basis of a Chinese library. " The work is divided into three sections: The Southern Capitals, The Yangtze Capitals and The Yellow Capitals. Geil devotes a chapter to each of these cities as he describes his travels to Hangchow, Foochow, Canton, Kweilin, Kweiyang, Yunnanfu, Soochow, Nanking, Anking, Nanchang, Wuchang, Changsha, Chengtu, Lanchow, Sian, Kaifeng, Taiyuanfu, Tsinan, and Peking in 1910. There are maps of: Wu-Han, Yunnanfu, North East Kiangsi and Kaifeng.
