Erstausgabe
First appearance in print of the text of a lecture given by Gerald de Gaury, the former British political agent in Kuwait and a close advisor to Ibn Saud during the early years of the Second World War. Speaking to the Royal Central Asian Society on 27 October 1943, de Gaury (1897-1984) argues that global communications, the discovery of oil, and the stability introduced under Ibn Saud's rule are ushering in a new age of Arabian prosperity. He praises Ibn Saud's introduction of the rule of law: "it is said that a bag of coffee dropped by a caravan will not be touched until the caravan returns, perhaps months later" (p. 43). Assessing the positive state of the Arabian economy, he points to the success of the irrigation project at al Kharj and the potential of the vast fish stocks of the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf. De Gaury was a British Arabist, diplomat, and explorer who was intimately involved in the political events leading to the creation of the Arab states in the mid-20th century. He was commissioned second lieutenant Hampshire Regiment in August 1914 and fought on the Somme and at Gallipoli, where he was wounded four times and awarded the Military Cross. While convalescing he taught himself Arabic, leading to employment as a soldier-diplomat across the Middle East, during which he became close friends with the ruling families of Iraq, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia. In 1935, he accompanied Sir Andrew Ryan to Riyadh to present Ibn Saud with the Grand Cross of the Bath on behalf of King George V. Between 1936 and 1939, he served as political agent in Kuwait and, in the winter of 1939-40, again visited Riyadh as special emissary to Ibn Saud. His liaison work in the Nejd and Asir meant that he was able to spend time hunting in the desert with Ibn Saud, further cultivating a friendship of considerable mutual warmth, and in November 1943 he accompanied crown prince Faisal on his visit to the UK. Macro 818. Large octavo, pp. 40-7 within the journal. Original red card wrappers, spine and front cover lettered in black. Folding map of Arabian Peninsula. Wrappers lightly toned, top edge foxed, internally clean. A very good copy indeed.
