Foxing to end inside covers and edge. Wear and tear to D/J. Couple of pieces of D/J. missing. Few subjects have evoked so much mediocre verse as had man's reaction to the animal world. Affection for and admiration of certain animals, and awe at the 'brute' characteristics of others, are facile emotions, experienced by nearly all men, few of whom, however, have the true poetic feeling or power of expression. Derek Gilpin Barnes has, in this book, compiled an unusual and refreshing anthology of animal poetry - as distinct from verse. Thanks to wide reading, a critical selective faculty and an untarnished appreciation of animals as animals, he has made this a fine and exciting book. This vivid anthology has an instant appeal to every animal lover, whether a love of poetry or not. Illustrations. 175 pp. (We carry a wide selection of titles in The Arts, Theology, History, Politics, Social and Physical Sciences. academic and scholarly books and Modern First Editions, Reference books ,and all types of Academic Literature.).

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This volume sets out to draw together the essential expertise which will provide a technical guide to the practice of Raman spectroscopy. The text deals exc1usively with spontaneous Raman spectroscopy and inc1udes some aspects of Resonance Raman spectroscopy. Chapter I sets out the essential theoretical framework using a simple c1assical approach and deals with the rudiments of polarizability. Many of these theoretical points are further developed in Chap. 2 where the scattering and polarization consequences of various sampling geometries and collection optics, on gaseous, liquid, single crystal and thin film methods are detailed. The relative advantages and disadvantages of the wide variety of hardware now available to the Raman spectroscopist are discussed in Chap. 3. Important calibration data is pr. esented in Chap. 4 along with an account of datä analysis techniques, inc1uding signal enhancement methods. Chapter 5 describes some of the techniques and cell designs that have been successfully used to study sampies under extreme conditions and Chap. 6 deals with the rapidly growing technique of Raman microscopy, providing a wide range of application examples and experimental advice. We recognise the difficulty in covering all aspects of Raman spectroscopy in a single volume and a section on further reading, representing what we feel are amongst the more informative references, at the time of publication, is provided for additional detail. Our hope is that Practical Raman Spectroscopy will help to provide a source of on-hand technical support and data for the practising Raman spectroscopist in the laboratory.

In den Warenkorb8vo. pp. 31, [i]. Original publisher's black buckram lettered gilt on spine. Dust jacket. Presentation copy: 'For Derek Stanford With best wishes C. Wrey Gardiner.' Letter handwritten in pencil on both recto and verso of rear free endpaper addressed to Wrey Gardiner from presumably Derek Stanford consisting of about 190 words in which he says he enjoyed reading the book with its 'savour of poetry as an agony.' He then quotes Kierkegaard and singles out the poems he appreciated most. He continues 'I await your experiment ? with pleasure, since a fragment of prose from your Spanish novel in A Q intrigued me quite a little.' Printed dedication is to Alex Comfort, one of the editors of the anthology 'New Road' published by Wrey Gardiner's Grey Walls Press. Charles Wrey Gardiner (1901 1981), writer, poet, editor and publisher, was a well-connected literary figure, particularly in London before and after the Second World War. Derek Stanford (1918 2008) was a poet and critic and lover of Muriel Spark who he collaborated with on a number of works. Charles Wrey Gardiner was his friend, patron and first publisher. Occasional foxing to margins and rear lower edge of dust jacket. Very good. Slight foxing, otherwise very good.
