Paperback. Zustand: Gut. 1st Ed. / Number 182. 229 Ps. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - A little bit smudged on the back, otherwise good condition. - The favorable reception that our phonological study on local differences in Vulgar Latin was accorded by reviewers has encouraged us to pursue our our linguistic inquiry based on Christian Inscriptions of the funerary type. In this study we are attempting to give an organic treatment of an important area of morphology: the nominal flection. Specifically, it has been our aim to determine the extent to which this inscriptional material reflects the transformation of the Classical Latin multi-case system into the eventual one-case system of the Western Roman languages. To what extent, in other words,do these inscriptions that cover the period from the early fourth to the early seventh (and in the case of the Iberian Peninsula even the late seventh) centuries reveal (a) the survival of the classical system, and (b) trends in the direction of a collapse of this system. The salient points of the evolution of the classical system have repeatedly been outlined by leading Romanists of both past and present. Some of their explanations have, of course, been challenged in a number of individual studies concerned with the morphology of Late Latin texts and there still exists a great deal of disagreement on many issues. Much of this disagreement, we believe, is due to the fact that too often isolated cases are selected to prove the existence or non-existence of certain morphological forms, instead of evaluating them in the context of a quantitative analysis, comparing correct occurrences and deviations from the classical norm and then drawing conclusions from the ratio that exists between the two.Deviations alone do not, to our mind, afford the significance of a given phenomen and may well lead to assigning them exaggerated importance. The methodology we propose to follow in this study is essentially the same as the one employed in our previous analysis of the vocalism of late Christian Inscriptions. Again, with Ernst Diehls three-volume Insprictioes Latinae Christianae Veteres and Josè D. Vives Insprictiones cristianas de la Espana Romana y Visigoda as primary sources, we have counted all occurrences of each morphological phenomenon we propose to study according to Classical Latin standards and deviations therefrom and we have then compared the extent of deviatins among the various areas. Since an attempt has also been made to estabfish a chronology wherever possible, the numerical shown in tables in the Appendix, is based only on dated material However, examples of deviations from the classical norm are also taken from non-dated inscriptions, both to further illustrate a particular phenomenon observed in dated material and to support our conclusions. Zustand: Gut. 140 p., tab. From the library of Prof. Wolfgang Haase, long-time editor of ANRW and the International Journal of the Classical Tradition (IJCT). - A very good and clean copy. - From the introduction: This study is an extension of our previously published morpho-syntactic analysis in which we attempted to give, within a comparative-quantitative framework, an organic treatment of the nominal inflection in Latin Christian inscriptions with a view to ascertaining the extent to which these documents reflect the transformation of the Classical Latin multi-case system into the eventual one-case system of the Western Romance languages. In the course of the present analysis we propose to study morpho-syntactic phenomena culled from these same sources found in Dalmatia and the Latin Provinces of Noricum, Pannonia, Moesia, Dacia, Macedonia, and Thracia, also with the aim of determining the degree to which they reveal (a) the survival of the Classical Latin case system and (b) the trends that point in the direction of a collapse of this system. In keeping with the ultimate purpose of this inquiry, we also propose to compare data obtained from these Eastern regions of the Roman world with those already available for the Western regions, namely Gaul, the Iberian, and the Italian Peninsulas. Zustand: Sehr gut. Zustand: Sehr gut | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | Paul A. Gaeng's exhaustive morpho-syntactic analysis of Latin nominal declensions, as found in Christian funerary inscriptions from the Roman Empire, seeks to establish the extent to which this inscribed material reflects the period's linguistic evolution: from classical Latin's multi-case structure to the one-case system of Western Romance Languages. The study draws on E. Diehl's three-volume Inscriptiones Latinae Veteres and J. D. Vives's Inscripciones cristianas de las Espanas romana y visigoda for its heterogeneous dataset. Gaeng's work forms a valuable contribution to the study of the dissolution of the Latin declensional system in the shift from Latin to Romance.
