GADAMER, HANS-GEORG. A century of philosophy. Hans-Georg Gadamer in conversation with Riccardo Dottori. Translated by Rod Coltman with Sigrid Koepke. New York: Continuum, 2004, 152pp., . "A philosophical and historical testament to the twentieth century, this volume consists of a wide-ranging series of interviews conducted in 1999/2000 between the then centenarian and his former assistant and associate of over thirty years, Riccardo Dottori. These ten dialogues distill and situate Gadamer's philosophy in the context of what has arguably been the bloodiest century in human history. In the course of the interviews, Gadamer addresses - often critically - the work of a wide variety of philosophers, including Heidegger, Nietzsche, Jaspers, Popper, Vico, Habermas, Rorty, and Derrida., He also elaborates on German philosophy during the Nazi period; and, in one of the more fascinating conversations, we are treated to a glimpse of Gadamer's personal perspective on the question of Heidegger's Nazism, including a discussion of the political influence that great philosopher's wife, Elfirde, had on him that tends to contradict most other published accounts. With the possible exception of his autobiography (1985), A Century of Philosophy is perhaps the most accessible expression of Gadamer's life and work in English today.". - CONTENTS: Phronesis: A Philosophy of Finitude -- Ethics or Metaphysics -- Utilitarianism, Pragmatism, Pluralism (Calogero, Rorty, Popper) -- Ethics or Rhetoric (Vico, Nietzsche, Derrida) -- Metaphysics and Transcendence -- Ethics and Politics -- Tradition and Emancipation -- Philosophy in the Eye of the Storm -- Between Heidegger and Jaspers -- The Last God -- Dialogue on a Portrait. 9780826415240 ISBN 0826415245.

GADAMER, HANS-GEORG. Literature and philosophy in dialogue: essays in German literary theory. Translated with an introduction by Robert H. Paslick. Albany: State University of New York Press, 1994, 1st printing number line ending in 1, xxiii, 182pp., . SUNY series in contemporary continental philosophy. - Hans-Georg Gadamer, the major proponent of philosophical hermeneutics, reveals himself here as a highly sensitive reader and critic of the German literary tradition. This is not the work of a specialist as narrowly defined in the typical literary study. Although he is a master of the techniques of criticism, Gadamer always sees the study of literature as a fundamentally human activity where human beings, generation after generation, pose their questions to an encroaching darkness that threatens to rob them of their confidence in the meaning of life and death. Never pedantic or antiquarian, these studies show such literary giants of the German past as Goethe and Holderlin as our contemporaries. Gadamer demonstrates his ability to achieve the creative interplay of literature and philosophy which, in isolation, easily degenerate into sterile academic games. Typical of this dialogue are essays on Rainer Maria Rilke, including an examination of a problem of punctuation in one of his poems. What would be, in less capable hands, one more solution to a literary problem, turns out to be one of Gadamer's creative approaches to the mystery of man's relation to time and death. - CONTENTS: Goethe and philosophy -- Goethe and the moral world -- On the course of human spiritual development : studies of Goethe's unfinished writings -- Hölderlin and antiquity -- Hölderlin and the future -- Bach and Weimar -- The god of most intimate feeling -- Poetry and punctuation -- Rainer Maria Rilke's interpretation of existence : on the book by Romano Guardini -- Mythopoietic reversal in Rilke's Duino elegies. 9780791417355 ISBN 0791417352.

very good dust-jacket, slight wear along top edge, very good red cloth. GADAMER, HANS-GEORG. Plato's dialectical ethics: phenomenological interpretations relating to the Philebus. Translated and with an introduction by Robert M. Wallace. New Haven: Yale University Press, 1991, 1st printing number line ending in 1, xxxv, 240pp., . First published in German in 1931. - Plato's Dialectical Ethics, Gadamer's earliest work, has now been translated into English for the first time. This classic book, published in 1931 and reprinted in 1967 and 1982, is still important today. It is one of the most extensive and imaginative interpretations of Plato's Philebus and an ideal introduction to Gadamer's thinking. It shows how his influential hermeneutics emerged from the application of his teacher Martin Heidegger's phenomenological method to classical texts and problems. The work consists of two chapters. The first, which puts Socratic/Platonic dialectics and ethics in the context of Gadamer's thinking about how we come to shared understanding through conversation, helps to clarify the intentions and trajectory of all Gadamer's subsequent work. The second chapter, on the Philebus, will interest everyone who is concerned with the connection between Plato's discussions of ethics and those of Aristotle, and with the substantive issues of the relation between pleasure and reason that Plato explores and Gadamer interprets. This edition includes a new and useful introduction by the translator, Robert M. Wallace. 9780300048070 ISBN 0300048076.
