Furt (1902-1971), an Argentine humanist and author. The extent of the cataloguing is attested by the 3-page collation of just ONE book, namely the 1533 Venice edition of the "Amadis de Gaula" (acquired from the antiquarian bookseller Rothstein in 1949 (see pp. 27-30; see also David Hook, The Arthur of the Iberians: The Arthurian Legends in the Spanish and Portuguese Worlds, 2015, footnote 1). The "Biblioteca y Archivo Furt" on the "Los Talas" ranch and estate near Luján, Argentina, is one of the most significant private libraries in South America, containing valuable early printed editions and archival material, especially on Juan Bautista Alberdi. Altogether it has been estimated that the library contains some 40,000 books. See especially: Domingo Buonocore's "Contribucion a la Bio-Bibliografia de Jorge Martin Furt." COLOMBO. Texto del colofón, 44 pp INTONSO. Muy buen estado. RARÍSIMO EJEMPLAR. EN RAMA. Furt Dedicó su vida al quehacer intelectual pero no especuló con él. Heredero de bienes materiales, los puso al servicio de los del espíritu. Salvó libros, cuadros y colecciones de la indiferencia del olvido o de la expatriación. Así entre otras cosas, adquirió el archivo de Juan B. Alberdi, la biblioteca de Cháneton y parte de la de Tiscornia. Todo con sigilo. Como era él. Y en tanto, sufría apuros económicos por querer hacer su obra y salvar al mismo tiempo el patrimonio heredado. Ayudó a escritores y artistas y reeditó libros agotados. Desinteresadamente. Vocación obsesiva la suya y valiosa para el país y para tantos que pasaron a su lado. Las ediciones fueron generalmente limitadas y sus obras, extensas o no, distribuidas entre amigos, gente de letras y bibliófilos. Pero no era un elitista ni un orgulloso. Mi relación de años, me permite afirmar que fue un escéptico casi místico, de muchas vanidades; un humilde y exigente autocrítico. Tuvo influencias, pero entre ellas eligió su camino, que respondió a algo interior. Su estilo esa mezcla de castellano clásico con criollo tan personal lo evidencia. Desdeñó reglas, sistematizaciones pautas. También fue excepcional su amor por cada edición. Elegía el papel - se podía entonces- el tipo de letra, la diagramación, las viñetas. Cuidaba la perfección de las ilustraciones. Por eso estuvo siempre ligado a los Colombo, artistas impresores excepcionales. Para comprender su obra, tan importante como casi desconocida en su Argentina contemporánea, debiéramos analizarla toda. Por una razón de espacio y otra de oportunidad, ya que ésta debe ser una iniciación al tema Furt, nos referiremos solo a una parte de ella. Escaso ejemplar, raro.INTONSO est art2.
