ORIGINAL ART . *** **** *** . . A SUPERB COLOR PAINTING ON FINE SILK . . . PORTRAYING A STUNNING SILK KIMONO-CLAD BIJIN . * This is a superb hand-painted vertical scroll. The scroll is beautifully and skillfully painted in full color on very fine gauze hand-loomed silk material. This item is 45 cm. x 1.36 meters long. . The scene is at dusk, the faint & subtle outline image of a full moon adorns the top right areas, feint, nevertheless firmly there. . THE IMAGE: This shows a stunningly painted Bijin [beauty] who looks down on her partially opened golden fan. She has a pink flush to her eyes and cheeks. She wears a thin silk-gauze outer Kimono hand painted with Tombo [dragon flies. Her inner Kimono is decorated with white squares of Oshibori Roketsu Zome [Batik tie-dyed cloth using wax] in indigo-blue color. She wears one more internal solid bray Kimono, with a pale green Obi [waist belt]. all material is made of hand-loomed silk. A touch of her inner underwear red Kimono is shown in two places. This is a 'erotic signal' in Japanese art & culture. . Her bare left foot, wearing a black-lacquered short Geta [wooden shoe] is exposed with her toes peering out from under her Kimono lower edge. This is another example of a semi-erotic gesture in this portrait. . The artist's signed signature and red Hanko [seal/chop] is at the lower right corner. . On the silk, in the lower right corner margin is stamped in black Kanji: "Toho Bijutsu Kyokai [Tokyo Art Association]. the publisher. . *** THE ARTIST: FUKADA CHOKUJOH [1861-1947]; On this painting, he used of his several "Go" [studio names] of Shuugetsu. . He was a Nihon-Ga [Japanese style] painter. Studied in Kyoto under Morikawa Sohbun and taught briefly at a painting school. In 1886 he moved to Osaka to teach and do painting.
