Complete magazine: 16pp., folio. In good condition, on lightly-aged high-acidity paper. Three-quarters of the magazine is devoted to a catalogue by the publisher. It's catchy subtitle is 'A Quarterly devoted to the Printing of Unpublished Manuscripts and Original Articles of Archaeological, Historical, Literary, Sociological and Theological interest.' Curle's front-page article covers more than one-and-a-half pages, with the following prefatory note: 'The Article printed below is not only interesting in itself, but important as being in the nature of a Supplement to the author's book on the Ray Society which is just about to be issued by the Society at 10/6, and is advertised in this Catalogue. It is full of facts and ideas not mentioned in the book and should in its pamphlet form, be in possession of every owner of "The Ray Society: a Bibliographical History," by Richard Curle. The pamphlet, with a full-page frontispiece of John Ray (different from the portrait in the Ray Society's Bibliography), may be obtained from us at 2/6.' Curle explains that as a result of 'considered judgment, lack of space, pure ignorance, sheer forgetfulness', omissions have occurred to his book, which he will attempt to correct in what is a 'sort of brief and fragmentary Supplement. Other articles in the number are: '1821 Letter from New York', 'A Pedigree Book by H. T. Kirby' and '17th C. Latin Verse'. …

Three pages, 8vo, some damage, but text clear and complete, tear at fold of bifolium despite attempt to repair with sellotape., He has been asked by a friend to get an answer about the diseases of camels, quoting his enquiry in which one, "Photoshootui" ("if I read the word right"), is described, and referring to "ancient" sources and Native opinion. His correspondent "is engaged in a popular treatise, or history, of vaccination". Hallam hopes for references to Western books that might give information. …

All items in good condition. The letters on blue paper, and each in a stamped, postmarked envelope, addressed to 'Mrs Felicity Rhodes | North Lodge | 128 Banbury Road | Oxford'. Letter One (29 May 1995): 2pp., 12mo. He thanks her for typing the poem, which is 'only just the first part of a rather long one and doesn't really quite stand on its own - not that the whole thing comes off except for a few lines here and there.' he has 'never thought of having any Poems published', as he is 'only too aware of how sadly they limp along'. He has only shown them to 'one or two friends'. He would have liked to have been 'like the Greek Alexandrian Poet Cavaffy [sic] who used to carry copies of his latest poems in his pocket to distribute among his friends. But then he was a very great poet and his friends must have felt very privileged.' He has been 'very impressed' by what he has 'glimpsed' of Rhodes's own poems. Accompanied by a typescript (by Rhodes?) of an untitled poem. 1p., 8vo. Headed in pencil: 'MAURICE CARDIFF.' It begins: 'Come to the edge and watch | The sickle winged sea birds, the slow | Implacable onrush of incoming sea | Beat on the rock bed and seawrack below.' Letter Two (4 February 1996): 2pp., 12mo. He has enjoyed reading her manuscript, which is 'full of fascinating facts and all so well written and clearly presented'. If she intends it to be 'a history of the dance in relation to the theatre' he wonders why she 'begins with the Etruscans and not the Greeks who had both'. He goes on to discuss the 'frescoes at Tarquinium', and is pleased at the news that she is 'getting back to painting'. 'I hope you are enjoying the dark ages.' In a postscript he explains that he is enclosing a 'rather poem prompted by the recent snow.' Accompanied by an Autograph Poem by Cardiff, 1p., 12mo, titled 'A Winter Casualty'. 20 lines arranged in four five-line stanzas. The first stanza reads: 'The flakes are falling fast | I sit by the fire and recall | Such snow-falls in the past | The snow-man and giant ball | That for more than a month might last.'.…

The title character of the play, General Harras, is based on the ace Ernst Udet and his struggles during the second world war, simultaneously working under and openly being against the Nazi Party. Despite the serious scenario of it, a comical and satirical tone is often used throughout the play. Both letters are 3pp., 12mo, and both bifoliums. In good condition, on lightly aged paper. An interesting couple of letters, with Larkin advising the engraver on how to extract payment from the publishers, while stressing in both letters that he does not wish his own name mentioned. The first letter begins: 'The Printer has had the Woodcut and printed it, so you can go ahead! If I were you I think I should write something to this effect - not returning the account, they can ask for it if they want it.' He gives the text of his proposed letter, which explains that the engraver was 'commission to make the Woodcut of Frederick the Great's Autograph by Mr Carlyle, who said I was to send it to you with the account, and that you would settle for it.' The letter states that the engraving is the eighth 'for the work by Mr Carlyle's order', and the first to be 'disputed' by the publishers, and threatens to approach Carlyle directly. Following the text of the letter Larkin tells the engraver that it will be 'quite enough', and that it will result in the publishers asking him 'as a favour to accept the money!' He concludes with the warning: 'Recollect they might show your letter to Mr Carlyle, and if you send too much, it mightn't be pleasant!' The second letter states that since the account remains unpaid, the engraver should 'write a note to Mr Carlyle informing him how often you have applied for payment, and enclosing the note from Mr Chapman which you showed me. And ask him to kindly tell you what to do.' Larkin is keen that Carlyle should not 'think (if he knew you had consulted me) that I might look after Mr Chapman for him: which I don't altogether care to do'. He gives more advive, before apologising for not visiting him, having 'damaged my knee'.…
