Extending the definition of ecology to encompass social relations and human subjectivity as well as environmental concerns, The Three Ecologies argues that the ecological crises that threaten our planet are the direct result of the expansion of a new form of capitalism and that a new ecosophical approach must be found which respects the differences between all living systems. This edition includes a chronology of Guattari's life and work, introductions to both his general philosophy and to the work itself, and extended notes to the original text. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

In den WarenkorbPaperback. Zustand: Very Good. In How to Be a Marxist in Philosophy one of the most famous Marxist philosophers of the 20th century shares his concept of what it means to function fruitfully as a political thinker within the discipline and environs of philosophy. This is the first English translation to Althusser's provocative and, often, controversial guide to being a true Marxist philosopher. Althusser argues that philosophy needs Marxism. It can't exist fully without it. Similarly, Marxism requires the rigour and structures of philosophy to give it form and focus. He calls all thinking people to, 'Remember: a philosopher is a man who fights in theory, and when he understands the reasons for this fight, he joined the ranks of the struggle of workers and popular classes.' In short, this book comprises Althusser's elucidation of what praxis means and why it continues to matter. With a superb introduction from translator and Althusser archivist G.M. Goshgarian, this is a book that will re-inspire contemporary Marxist thought and reinvigorate our notions of what political activism can be. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Zustand: Good. - Approximately 119 words penned in black ink on a 8-1/4 inch high by 5-1/4 inch wide sheet of bluish-gray paper. Signed "B. S Hilaire". The paper is lightly bumped with its edges slightly faded. There is a small tear to the right edge. Folded twice for mailing. Good. Barthelemy-Saint-Hilaire writes in French to an English gentleman who has been referred to him by Lord Houghton. He apologizes for failing to find him at a crowded function. He explains that he had ordered the guards to make sure that the gentleman got past the door, and had also brought with him a friend who spoke very good English. He says that he is completely at the gentleman's disposal if he can be of use in acquainting him with "nos affaires politiques", which at the moment are very complicated.Jules Barthelemy-Saint-Hilaire [1805-1895] was a French statesman and philosopher. In his early years he worked for the Ministry of Finance and was an active journalist. After 1830 he gave up politics in order to devote himself to the study of ancient philosophy, undertaking a translation of Aristotle which occupied him for most of his life. After the revolution of 1848 he was elected a republican deputy from the department of Seine-et Oise. Following further political upheavals he was apppointed senator for life. From 18800-81 he was minister of foreign affairs in the cabinet of Jules Ferry.

3 letters 8vo (135 x 210 mm), 3 pp. (one on a bifolium), plus one letter 12mo (114 x 130 mm), 1 p. Correspondence from one of France's prominent philosophers and republican politicians during the Second Empire and the Third Republic, some dating from his brief tenure as president of the latter. Together, they offer a cross-section of his trajectory from oppositional thinker to head of government. The work was an expression of his republican principles in opposition to the power of Napoleon III. - 2) A statement reading "Je jure obéisance à la constitution en fidélité à l'empereur", dated Paris, 9 May 1863, probably in connection with his standing as a candidate in the elections of the following month. The careful wording was clearly chosen to allow the republican statesman to avoid swearing loyalty to the emperor directly. - 3) Paris, 19 January, year not given but clearly 1877 as it is on letterhead of the Ministery of the Interior, a post he held together with Presidency between 12 December 1876 and 17 May 1877, which accounts for how busy he was at the time: in attempting to arrange dinner with a friend, he states that Monday is the only day he has free all week. - 4) 13 December, no year. Personal blue paper embossed JS. A letter on business, seemingly the signing of a letter - no response from Martel, while Languinois abstains as he is no longer a deputy. If from 1876 as seems likely, this would date to the day after Simon assumed the posts of Président du Conseil des ministres and Ministre de l'Intériuer. The personal letterhead implies a more informal side of political negotiations. - A collection which together offers glimpses into the life of a politician and intellectual of later nineteenth-century France. - Light browning according with age, one item with creases and tears, repaired, some very light smudging and staining in a few places. All items clear and legible, all signatures clean and elegant.

4to. French manuscript on paper. (2) pp. on 2 ff. Interesting early manuscript of chapter I/2 of his series of articles entitled "Les communistes et la paix" that was first published in Sartre's journal "Les Temps modernes" (July 1952 - April 1954) and later in its entirety and thoroughly revised as part of the collection Situations VI (1964). The original title of the chapter, "Moscou veut la guerre", sets the cynical tone of the text that was first conceived in reaction to the deadly suppression of the Paris protests against General Ridgway on 28 May 1952 and the subsequent wrongful arrest of the French communist leader Jacques Duclos. Sartre accuses Western, particularly U.S. politicians of hypocrisy as, in the name of peace, they employ the violent and belligerent means that theye ascribe to the Soviet Union, polemically asking, in a deleted section: "Do you not also pretend to desire peace? I look for your olive twigs and I see atomic bombs, I look for your doves and I see rocket planes. You say that you show your force so as not to have to make use of it. But to show force is already violence: let your tanks defile, cover the African sky with your bombers [.]". - With "Les communistes et la paix" Sartre publicly affirmed his support of the French Communist Party, despite its loyalty to Stalin, which would cause his rupture with Maurice Merleau-Ponty. In 1956, appalled by the Soviet invasion of Hungary, Sartre definitely broke with the party. Unsurprisingly, the corresponding pages in the 1964 publication Situations VI (96-97) are very different from the manuscript and the article. - Some browning and bent corners.

8vo. 4 pp. on bifolium. To a friend about their mutual acquaintance Félix Stappaerts (1812-85), editor of the "Revue Britannique Belge", who had promised Leopold, Duke of Brabant and heir apparent to the Belgian throne, to use his journal to lobby for the construction of a Belgian fleet, and attempted to convince Alphonse-Nicolas Lebègue (1814-85), the editor of "L'Office de Publicité", to do the same, efforts which led to accusations of his having abandoned his political independence as a journalist to be levelled against him: "M. - Small marginal flaws, slightly affecting text. 8vo. 2¾ pp. on bifolium. With autograph envelope. Written in exile to the lawyer Gustave Chaudey (1817-71) in Paris fearing the imminent seizure and auction of his and his wife's possessions at their Paris home, hoping she will be able to secure his manuscripts and notes, as well as his collection of the Revue du Peuple, and a Latin Bible with his handwritten annotations: "A présent j'ai à vous consulter sur deux choses: 1. - A few tiny marginal flaws. - Corresponance VIII, 135-138.

Soft cover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. Paperback. Demy 8vo. (21 x 14 cm). In Ottoman script. [8], 248, [1] p. Henri-Louis Bergson was one of the most famous and influential French philosophers of the late 19th century-early 20th century. Although his international fame reached cult-like heights during his lifetime, his influence decreased notably after the Second World War. While such French thinkers as Merleau-Ponty, Sartre, and Lévinas explicitly acknowledged his influence on their thought, it is generally agreed that it was Gilles Deleuze's 1966 Bergsonism that marked the reawakening of interest in Bergson's work. Deleuze realized that Bergson's most enduring contribution to philosophical thinking is his concept of multiplicity. Bergson's concept of multiplicity attempts to unify in a consistent way two contradictory features: heterogeneity and continuity. Many philosophers today think that this concept of multiplicity, despite its difficulty, is revolutionary. It is revolutionary because it opens the way to a re-conception of community. Especially for his intuition concept, his ideas were adopted by conservative philosophers and intellectuals of Turkey and the last Ottoman Empire. Halil Nimetullah Öztürk was a Turkish author and translator. He graduated from the Istanbul University Faculty of Law. He studied philosophy in Paris. In 1910, he became a lecturer in philosophy and theology at Darülfunun (Istanbul University)and became a professor in 1928. After the Turkish Letter Revolution in 1928, he published many reviews and articles on the purification of the Turkish language from foreign words. 8vo. 1 p. To the lawyer Anatole Catusse, declining an invitation to dinner because of his earlier acceptance of an invitation to attend the "inauguration dinner of the Musée social". The letter can be dated with respect to the dinner that took place on Monday 25 March 1895. As Izoulet mentions, the Musée Social was funded by count Aldebert de Chambrun. - In the second part of the letter, Izoulet expresses his regret that Madame Marie-Maguerite Catusse couldn't attend a Latin thesis defense ceremony at the Sorbonne earlier that year because the "hall was full" when she arrived. - Marie-Maguerite Catusse (1858-1928) was one of the closest friends of Marcel Proust's mother Jeanne Weil and a friend and longtime correspondent of Marcel Proust. - The Musée social was founded to preserve documents from the Social Economy pavilion of the 1899 Exposition Universelle. Over the years, the well-funded institution became an important center of research into a broad range of topics, including social housing, labor organization, and city planning. Based on its expertise and important supporters and members, the Musée social gained great influence over government policy in the 1st half of the 20th century. - With a tear to a fold slightly affecting the text.
