Zustand: VERY GOOD. First printing. The second novel set in the Midwest by this author, literary critic and professor, who was born in Indiana although he lived most of his life in California. In 1933, in the midst of the Depression, Henry Whitehead comes back to a small town in Northern Indiana determined to kill the man who ruined his father and whom he considered responsible for his father's suicide, but instead he learns that not all is as simple as it seems, as he gradually comes to a greater maturity. INSCRIBED on the front endpaper with the comment 'this moral tale.' 318 pp. Wraparound dust jacket by Gaynor Chapman. Very good in very good dust jacket (corners slightly bumped, light toning to pages, some rubbing and edgewear to dj, spine sunned).

One section of pages' edges have not tanned as is the rest of the text block ends. An address label is on the front endpaper. DJ: The back panel's margins, the flaps' fold and top edges, and the lettering on the spine panel have darkened. The end of a fold has a linear 1/4 in. chip. The reverse side has foxing on the spine panel and has a 1 1/4 in. line of scraped paper on the top end of the front flap. Scans e-mailed upon request.
