First Edition. With eight lithographed plates of flowers in bloom executed by Hulme accompanied by extracts from poems by major English poets, thus Wordsworth on daisies and broom, Leyden on the yew, Herrick on apple blossoms. Carew on primrose, Barton on the pansy, Browne on the periwinkle, and Agnes Howell on the Japonica. Bound in highly ornate cloth with upper board and spine decorated in gilt, red and black. All edges coated in gilt. Apart from some light rubbing near the head of the spine and corner tips, this is a superb copy with no fading to spine or rubbing of any kind. School prize bookplate laid down to front pastedown,awarded as first prize in session 1882-83 from Dundee School of Art (now part of Unoversity of Dundee). A fine copy. Frederick Edward Hulme was a teacher and an amateur botanist. From 1886 he fulfilled the role of Professor of Freehand and Geometrical Drawing at King's College London from 1886. His most famous work was 'Familiar Wild Flowers', issued in nine volumes from 1878 to 1909. Book.

Cloth. Zustand: Very Good. Frederick Edward Hulme (illustrator). A beautiful set of eight volumes from F. Edward Hulme's famous work with botanical colour plates. The first eight volumes from Familiar Wild Flowers by Frederick Edward Hulme in the original publisher's decorative cloth bindings.Hulme was a teacher and botanist from the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. He is best known for this work.Densely illustrated throughout with many beautiful colour plates by Hulme of flowers. All volumes are collated and complete with thirty nine plates and a frontispiece to each volume.The first and second series are undated, the third, fifth, sixth, seventh, and eighth are dated 1906, and the fourth series is dated 1902. In the original publisher's cloth bindings. Externally, smart. There is some bumping and wear to the heads and tails of the spines and to the extremities. There are some light marks to the boards. The hinges are slightly strained but firm. Internally, generally firmly bound. The pages are bright and clean with the odd spot. Very Good. book.

B&W floriated initials and tailpieces depicting each flower, as well as one colour plate per flower described, for a total of 204 colour plates across the five series. Previously recased, binding appears to be early 20th century. Spine faded, some light staining to boards, a few small spots of wear to edges. Ink ownership inscription to ffep. Light foxing and rust staining. Some staining to edges of text block (worse at rear). Offsetting from pressed flower between series two and three. A magnificently illustrated volume, figured and described by the author, and it stands as his most famous work.
