Die Kriege Napoleons, der amerikanische Bürgerkrieg und die beiden Weltkriege trugen bereits einen gänzlich anderen Charakter. Krieg und Kriegführung wandelten sich. Das ursprünglich kunstvolle Kriegshandwerk entartete zu einer barbarischen Kriegsführung, zum Einsatz von Massenvernichtungsmitteln, zum totalen Krieg. Die geschichtliche Entwicklung Europas in den letzten zweihundert Jahren wird von Fuller in klarer und präziser Art dargestellt. Er gibt eine gedrängte und scharf pointierte Übersicht jener Faktoren, die Krieg und Kriegsführung gleichermaßen beeinflußt haben, wie sie die materiellen Möglichkeiten des Menschen potenzierten.
