Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Fair dj. Illustrated by Frederic Dorr Steele (illustrator). 1st Edition (H-D). [moderate wear to top edges of covers, rubbing to paper label on front cover, a little discoloration to endpapers and first few pages at front of book, original owner's acquisition note on ffep; jacket chipped along top edge and along spine, very faded at spine (all lettering gone), general wear and soiling]. "Against a novel setting this vivid story of fourteen year old Carmella, daughter of Italian peasants and child of the Italian quarter of an American city, catches the very spirit of Americanization and what it means to our foreign born citizens." The book was the winner of the American Girl-Harper prize contest, as "the best book of fiction for girls"; one of the judges was novelist Kathleen Norris. The author was a longtime newspaper editor in Providence, Rhode Island; this was apparently his only published book of fiction -- which kinda makes you wonder what would compel a man in his early 50s to write a novel for a young female readership? ***This book is among the nearly 150 items offered in ReadInk's new Catalog Number 4, "Booking Passage: Books on the Immigrant Experience." Folio. Zustand: Very Good in Wraps. First Edition. First Edition. Folio. William Hooker Gillette, 1853-1937 was an American actor-manager, playwright, and stage-manager. He is best remembered for portraying Sherlock Holmes on stage in 1899 and in a 1916 silent film. Gillette's portrayal of Holmes significantly influenced the modern image of the detective. His use of the deerstalker cap (which first appeared in some Strand illustrations by Sidney Paget) and the curved pipe became enduring symbols of the character. The final play starring Gillette, as Holmes took place at the Hotel Touraine, Boston, 1929, portraying the strange case of Miss Faulkner. Laid is a printed portrait of William Gillette, with autograph on lower right. Souvenir program drawing shows silhouette of Sherlock Holmes by Frederic Dorr Steele. The program features memoirs by Steele, Conan Doyle, Clayton Hamilton, Walter Prichard Eaton, Calvin Coolidge, and Booth Tarkington. Uncommon with signature. Closed tear through, evidence of dampstaining and age toning, else tight, bright, and unmarred. Folio in orange and black wrappers. fo. 16pp. Illus. (b/w). Laid in b/w photographic printed portrait, signed by Gillette.
