Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. 1st Edition. First Edition in English, first thus. Small 8vo, (2) + pp261 complete with b/w frontis, 3 full page woodcuts and 4 others within the text. Hardcover no dust jacket. Period full calf binding with 5 raised bands and gilt titles with decorative panels to spine in very good- condition with some shelf wear to top & tail of spine along with some rubbing to board edges. Inside some foxing to endpapers with all other pages, with full marbled edge in very good clean and bright condition for its age. Baron G. Culvier was a French naturalist and zoologist, sometimes referred to as the "founding father of paleontology". Cuvier is also remembered for strongly opposing theories of evolution, believing there was no evidence for evolution, but rather evidence for cyclical creations and destructions of life forms by global extinction events such as deluges and becoming the most influential proponent of catastrophism in geology in the early 19th century. A very nice copy of this very scarce foundational paleontology text.

Text clear and complete, with good clear signature. Fair, on aged and lightly-creased paper, with 1.5 cm closed tear in top left-hand corner (not affecting text). The 'Objet de la lettre' is given as 'Envoi d'un Brevet de Pension'. The pension will be paid 'par la Caisse d'Amortissement'. Engraving: Original, on paper 24 x 15.5 cm. Captioned 'G. CUVIER.' A good clear impression on grubby, spotted and lightly-creased paper.
