Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. First of this edition. Very Good. First English language edition. 12mo, 92, [4] pages, green cloth The American issue of the British sheets. Giran has re-imagined Job as a current-day resident of Holland, whereat he is beset upon by the same life drama as the biblical Job. "The book is alive, and the ideas propounded seem actually to have become incarnate in Eliphaz, Bildad and Zophar. . The reader is irresistibly attracted by the strong and noble eloquence of a thinker whose simple style and intense loyalty to truth should provea rare stimulus to lofty endeavor and devoted purpose in these troublous times.". Giran was a french Protestant pastor, with creative imagination. A truly engaging dialogue. Paul Carus' Open Court is the era's philosophical publisher.

This American edition undated but UK edition apparently 1929. xiv+301; brown mark top outer margins from p. 269 gradually enlarging to end pastedown where it is 4.5 x 0.75 cm, last 2 text leaves have small stretch of scuffing/chipping to bottom edge near gutter. Dark cloth covers generally clean and unworn but a little dull and bottom 5 cm of spine has an odd central strip of rippling of little consequence. A basically racist account committed to 'primitive thought' and inherent inferiority of savages. Author was a Protestant missionary. This seems to be a translation of his 1927 'Le Non-civilise et nous.'. Uncommon. Hardcover. Zustand: vg. Reprint. Octavo. VII, [1], 200, [12]pp. Original dark blue cloth with gold lettering on spine and front cover. Remarkable introduction to the meaning of what is comical: What does laughter mean? What common ground can we find between the grimace of a merry-andrew, a play upon words, an equivocal situation in a burlesque and a scene of high comedy? What method of distillation will yield us invariably the same essence from which so many different products borrow either their obtrusive odour or their delicate perfume? The greatest of thinkers, from Aristotle downwards, have tackled this little problem, which has a knack of baffling every effort, of slipping away and escaping only to bob up again, a pert challenge flung at philosophic speculation. Our excuse for attacking the problem in our turn must lie in the fact that we shall not aim at imprisoning the comic spirit within a definition. We regard it, above all, as a living thing. However trivial it may be, we shall treat it with the respect due to life. We shall confine ourselves to watching it grow and expand.

Reprint - first 'New Eversley Series' edition. vii, 200pp. Henri-Louis Bergson (1859-1941) was a French philosopher who was influential in the traditions of analytic philosophy and continental philosophy. Laughter is a collection of three essays, first published in the French review Revue de Paris. In the work, Bergson develops a theory not of laughter itself but of how laughter can be provoked. He describes the process of laughter, used in particular by comics and clowns, as caricature of the mechanistic nature of humans (habits, automatic acts, etc.), one of the two tendencies of life (degradation towards inert matter and mechanism, and continual creation of new forms). However, he warns that laughter's criterion of what should be laughed at is not a moral criterion and that it can in fact cause serious damage to a person's self-esteem. The book is bound in the original maroon cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and a blind-stamped publisher's emblem on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with light bumping to the bottom of the spine and a touch of fading to the top of the spine. The contents are tight and clean with a name written on the front free endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper is very good with some shelf wear and light soiling and browning to the spine. There is some rubbing along the top edge and the top of the spine is bumped and chipped with small pieces missing from the spine corners. There is a scrape near the bottom of the spine that has caused a small tear that has been repaired on the reverse with a strip of document repair tape.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Henri Bergson's 'Laughter: An Essay on the Meaning of the Comic' is a profound exploration of humor, comedy, and the very nature of laughter itself. This seminal work delves into the philosophical underpinnings of what makes us laugh, examining the social function and significance of comic situations. Bergson masterfully blends philosophy with keen observations on human behavior, dissecting various forms of humor and satire to uncover their underlying mechanisms.
