Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - 'Hand-Atlas of Human Anatomy: Vol. III Viscera, Brain, Nerves, Sense-Organs' is a definitive and masterfully illustrated medical reference that provides an exhaustive examination of the internal structures of the human body. This third volume in the seminal series by Werner Spalteholz, with contribu…tions from Lewellys F. Barker and Franklin P. Mall, focuses on the complex anatomy of the viscera, the nervous system, and the primary sense organs.Known for its extraordinary precision and clarity, this atlas offers a comprehensive visual guide to the thoracic and abdominal cavities, as well as the intricate pathways of the brain and spinal cord. Each section is designed to facilitate a deep understanding of human morphology through detailed plates that highlight the topographical relationships between organs and systems. The work is particularly noted for its treatment of the cranial nerves and the delicate architecture of the eye and ear, making it an essential resource for medical students, practitioners, and historians of science. As a monumental contribution to the field of anatomical science, this volume demonstrates a perfect synthesis of artistic skill and clinical accuracy. It remains a valuable tool for anyone seeking to master the complexities of human biology and the historical foundations of modern medical illustration. This work has been selected by scholars as being culturally important, and is part of the knowledge base of civilization as we know it. In den Warenkorb"The Space of Mall" and the Origin of Knowledge of the Institium MALL, Franklin Paine (1862-1917). A study of the structural unit of the liver. In American Journal of Anatomy, 5, 1906, 227-308, 74 illustrations. V, 523pp. Text illustrations. Contemporary cloth-backed boards, uncut, rebacked. 260 x 195 mm. Library stamps on the f…irst page of papers in the volume but a very good copy. First Edition of one of Mall's most significant works that has recently been acknowledged by researchers as the origin of knowledge of the Interstitium, which has been proposed as a posssible "third circulatory system" within the human body. Mall defined the liver's structural unit as a tissue block centered on a portal vein, rather than the classic hepatic lobule centered on a central vein. He proposed that the structural unit of the liver is defined by its vascular and connective tissue, demonstrating how blood flows and mixes within the reticular framework. His name is still used today for the Space of Mall, which is the microscopic interstitial fluid space between the connective tissue of the portal canal and the outermost hepatocytes. Mall proved that the supporting framework (reticulum) of organs like the liver exists independently of the cells. "Mall identified a microscopic fluid-filled space between the connective tissue of the portal triad and the hepatocytes (limiting plate). He demonstrated that this space serves as a pre-lymphatic conduit, where fluids from hepatic capillaries extravasate into the connective tissue before reaching the lymphatic vessels. Reticular Network Discovery: Using "putrefaction" to digest cellular material, Mall revealed a three-dimensional reticular framework made of collagen and elastin that supports all organs. Modern research shows this framework defines the structure of the interstitium, acting as a scaffold for the fluid-filled "sinuses" that allow materials to flow throughout the body. Structural Continuity: Mall was the first to propose that these fibroconnective layers (peri-arterial, peri-venous, and peri-biliary stroma) form an interconnected system rather than isolated compartments. This directly aligns with the modern definition of the interstitium as a continuous highway for fluid and cell movement across organ boundaries. Functional Integration: His work integrated anatomy with physiology by showing how these interstitial spaces are critical for mixing materials from the hepatic artery and portal vein, facilitating the liver's role in lymphatic drainage and nutrient." In den WarenkorbZustand: Fine. First edition. Rare installment of this important and influential scholarly series, including W.E.B. Du Bois's essay "Races of Men." The Atlanta University Publications was a numbered series of monographs published by Atlanta University, with text and other content drawn from information presented at the annual Co…nferences for the Study of Negro Problems. As University president Horace Bumstead explained the series' origins: "One was the inauguration, for the first time in any American college, of a thoroughly scientific study of the conditions of Negro life, covering all its most important phases, and resulting in a score of annual Atlanta University Publications, conceded to be the highest authority" (quoted in Morris 91). Gathering speeches, studies, and other data from that annual event, the university issued these groundbreaking sociological annuals until 1917 when publication was halted for financial reasons. Taken as a whole, the Atlanta University series presented the most comprehensive sociological study of Black America available at the time, and covered topics pertaining to African American health, economics, culture, discrimination, education, family life, and the like. In his autobiography, Du Bois (who edited most of the volumes and contributed much of the text) wrote of the series' importance: "For 13 years we poured forth a series of studies; limited, incomplete, only partially conclusive, and yet so much better done than any other attempt of the sort in the nation that they gained attention throughout the world." This installment includes works by Frederick H. Means ("A Review of the Atlanta University Conferences and Social Studies"), Felix von Luschan ("Anthropological View of Race"), Franklin P. Mall ("Anatomical Characters of the Human Brain"), R.S. Woodworth ("Racial Differences in Mental Traits"), W.I. Thomas ("The Mind of the Savage"), Franz Boas ("Old African Civilizations" and "Race Problems in the United States"), and Alexander F. Chamberlain ("The Contribution of the Negro to Human Civilization"). All titles in this series are now scarce, with most copies either purchased for libraries or discarded, and are rare in this condition. A beautiful example from this pioneering scholarly project. 8.75'' x 6''. Original brown printed wrappers. 108 pages. Atlanta University Publications No. 20. Trace wear. Else bright, sharp, and sound.

In den WarenkorbArch. Anat. Phys., 1887 A/1. - Leipzig, Verlag von Veit & Comp., 1887, 8°, 88 pp., 3 Abbildungen, 6 Taf., orig. Broschur. First Edition! Franklin P. Mall (1862-1917), is most remembered for his work done at the Department of Embryology at the Carnegie Institute of Washington. Mall began collecting human embryos while a post grad…uate student in Leipzig with Wilhelm His, but didn't receive the first Carnegie specimen until his position at Johns Hopkins University. He made many advances in the study of embryology, including the development of the bronchial cleft region of the chick and in mammals, the coelomic cavity, the human intestine, heart, the structural unit of the liver, and blood vessels. Mall also studied the development of a 26-day old human embryo. In addition to his successes at the Carnegie Institution, Mall was president of the American Association of Anatomists from 1906-1908. In 1915 Mall began and edited the first 6 issues of the Contributions to Embryology and co-founded the American Journal of Anatomy (along with Charles S. Minot and George S. Huntington), which he published from his laboratory for eight years.
