Interior is clean and bright with small, shallow creases in margins not affecting text or photos. Robert Frank, one of the foremost American photograhers of the 20th century, is Swiss-born. His most famous work, The Americans, is compared to de Toqueville's Democracy in America because his outsider's perspective on American life is sharp and unbiased, revealing things that native-born Americans overlook. Every photo is also a political statement. This gem of an exhibit features 16 photos, most of them from the 1954 Democratic Convention in Chicago and the 1984 Democratic Convention in San Francisco. David Cooper's accompanying essay fulsomely treats Frank's work and contrasts the political landscapes of 1954 and 1984 and how Frank's photographs reflect the changes in American culture over 30 years.
