"Sold Only By Subscription" -- so, although first ed. was 1885 one assumes this is a limited ed.; 416 p., clean and unmarked within on strong paper only faintly age-toned; former owner's name on blank page following floral- patterned front end page; many very fine engraved portraits of famous writers; binding firm although front gutter is cracked; brown boards with clear gilt lettering and decoration around color picture of moonlit scene have light rubbing at corners and crown and foot of spine, sunning of spine, as well as a few stray white spots. Marbled fore-edge faded. Deserves rebinding--and the 56 frameable full-page engravings alone are collectible. Includes Chaucer, Spenser, Milton, Goethe, Schiller, Thomas Moore, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Walt Whitman, Edgar Allan Poe, Mark Twain are among the best.
