Tagli rossi, vignette incise ai frontespizi. Alcune figg. xilografiche intercalate n.t. Testatine e culs-de-lampe ornati. Qualche usuale brunitura. Bell'esemplare. Cfr. (altre edizioni): British Museum Catalogue, vol. XIII, col. 233. In den WarenkorbSoft cover. Zustand: Very Good. A wonderful survival, and very rare: the complete orchestral parts for three French opéras comiques from the early 1760s: Monsigny s Le cadi dupé (1761) and the brilliantly successful (New Grove) Le maréchal ferrant (1762) and Le bûcheron, ou Les trois souhaits (1763) by Philidor (1726 1795), the finest chess player of his age, certainly in northern Europe (Oxford DNB), associate of Rousseau and Diderot, Johnson and Burney, but also one of the most gifted French composers of his generation (New Grove). In the 1750s, Paris s suburban fair theatres were giving irresistible momentum to the genre of opéra comique, which the established theatre in Paris (Académie Royale de Musique) was no longer able to suppress. Philidor was the first important French composer in this genre, although preceded by the Italian Egidio Duni and soon rivalled by Pierre-Alexandre Monsigny. In opéra comique an Italian style was no obstacle, and he sensitively modified it to French words. His earliest theatre works, including arrangements and collaborations, are lost A. F. Quétant wrote the text for the popular Le maréchal ferrant (Foire St Laurent, 1761), in which the composer evokes the métiers of the blacksmith and coachman. In Le bûcheron (Comédie Italienne, 1763) he ingeniously parodied the old French style. His orchestration is simple and effective, and his pleasing melodies characterize persons and situations, but his particular gifts were making music out of scenes of normal life, and composing complicated but lucid ensembles in which different characters express their feelings simultaneously (Oxford DNB). Le cadi dupé: BUCEM, p. 148; RISM M 3163. Le maréchal ferrant: BUCEM, p. 779; RISM P 1858. Le bûcheron: BUCEM, p. 778; RISM P 1816. 8 vols, folio (339 × 255 mm); entirely engraved, each opera bound up according to part: Oboe Primo o flauto (Bûcheron, pp. 4; Maréchal ferrant, pp. 8), Oboe Segondo o flauto (Bûcheron, pp. 4), Corno Primo (Bûcheron, pp. 3, [1]; Cadi dupé, pp. 4; Maréchal ferrant, pp. 3, [1], Corno Secondo (Bûcheron, pp. 3, [1]; Cadi dupé, pp. 4; Maréchal ferrant, pp. 3, [1]; upper corner of final leaf torn away and sometime repaired), Violino Primo (Bûcheron, pp. 16; Cadi dupé, pp. 13, [1]; some offsetting; Maréchal ferrant, pp. 17, [1]; some offsetting), Violino Secondo (Bûcheron, pp. 16; Cadi dupé, pp. 13, [1]; some offsetting; Maréchal ferrant, pp. 17, [1]), Viola (Bûcheron, pp. 12; Cadi dupé, pp. 10; Maréchal ferrant, pp. 11, [1]), Violoncello o Basso (Bûcheron, pp. 12; Cadi dupé, pp. 10; Maréchal ferrant, pp. 11, [1]), the title-pages not included here, as is the case for some sets recorded by RISM; some plate tone, occasional spotting, but the paper largely clean, with generous margins; contemporary marbled paper wrappers, ms. title labels to front covers; housed in an old marbled-paper portfolio, a little worn, spine sunned.

Later edition of Philidor's (François-André Danican Philidor; 1726-1795) famous book on chess, that was published first in 1749. Philidor was regarded as the best chess player of his age. Published undated. An edition with the same colophon exists, it is dated to 1821. This is a later edition, still Goodspeed considered it as one of the earliest American books on chess, however some bibliographies assume that it was printed in Belgium. We found an identical edition at The Netherlands in the collection of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek, they dated it to 1850, but most likely erroneously, as this copy has a dated handwritten dedication on January, 1844. There is one thing that all our sources agree, that this one is a scarce and rather interesting edition. The book advertisements at the rear are related to the publishing houses Delarue in Paris and Blocquel-Castiaux in Lille, that firms the European origin of the book. Original calf, spine with raised bands and original label, the first gathering is protruding a bit from the book-block, with some early signatures relating to the PROBY family - 'Martha Proby the gift of her beloved mother. This book belonged once to my dear father', subsequently - 'A. W. Edmonds from her dear sister Martha, Feby. 1864', trifling wear at the spine ends and edges, overall a very good copy. *ESTC T120495 - The first edition, in French, was probably published in Paris in 1749, though using the false imprint of London. It was issued in a run of 443 copies, paid for by subscription and was translated into English and published in the following year by Nourse and Vaillant. These same publishers issued the second edition, offered here, in 1762. Philidor was a musical prodigy, enrolled with the choir of the Chapel-Royal in Versailles. As a pageboy in the royal chapel, he studied music with Andre Campra and learned to play chess by observing his fellow musicians play. He was also a prodigy at chess, initially having been taught by Kermur, the leading French player. In 1744 Philidor played two chess games blindfolded simultaneously in public in Paris, the first time blindfold play against 2 opponents was recorded. After various vicissitudes in his musical career, he moved to London, gaining his reputation as a world-class chess player, subsequently moving to Holland in 1748, publishing L'analyse du jeu des Eschecs in 1749. SEE The Oxford Companion to Chess : 'For the first time an author explained with detailed annotations how the middle-game should be played; for the first time the strategy of the game as a whole was described; for the first time the concepts of the blockade, prophylaxis, positional sacrifice, and mobility of the pawn formation were laid down. Philidor's famous comment, "Les pions sont l'âme du jeu" (in the English edition " the Pawns; they are the very Life of the Game"), was often misunderstood. He believed that ignorance of correct pawn play was the biggest weakness of his contemporaries. Some thought he was saying that pawns were more important than pieces, others that everything should be subordinated to the aim of promoting pawns. Philidor was also the first writer to examine a basic endgame (R + B v.R) in depth, although that was almost his only contribution to this phase of the game.'.
