Bound in original vellum, titled in manuscript in black ink on the cover, plain endleaves. (Minor wear to the covers, binding firm, in very good condition). Internally clean, with neat and legible hand writing. A thoughtfully compiled compendium of 333 neatly written receipts and cures for all manner of equine complaints and ailments from purges for worms to ointments for swellings. Responsible for the majority of the listed preparations and cures is Francis Philip Luck, who worked as a farrier at Boarsney Farm near Hurst Green in Sussex, in the early 19th century. There are a few leaves written in what appears to be later hand which adds to the list of cures, the first of these being dated 1830. An example of an ailment and its cure runs as follows: 276. For a horse pissing too much - Take turpentine 1oz, Japan earth, dragons blood each 2oz, gum arabic, allium. white vitriol 2 grams boiled in a quart of red wine.
