The author was formerly the Attorney General of the United States, and was also a Member of the International Military Tribunal at Nurnberg. In the first section of this book, the author discusses Justice Holmes' personality and thought, particularly as they affected his approach to the judicial process. In the second, Biddle analyzes the bitter, often personal attacks on Justice Holmes after the posthumous publication of his letters. Both of these essays deal with Holmes' questioning, empirical, and pragmatic philosophy of law. The third essay in the book discusses what general principles may be useful to members of the Supreme Court in determining the difficult questions of constitutional interpretation.
