Jacket is marked and scuffed. Edges are creased and torn, with a dog-ear to the upper edge of the front inner flap. Board edges, corners and spine ends are bumped and rubbed. Page block is tanned and blemished. A few light spots of foxing noted on the pastedowns and endpapers. Boards are clean, binding is sound and pages are clear. LW. Used.

The title of the 1861 original edition had 'Written by Herself' included in title.xxv+390, main text extends to p.156, with a short Appendix from original, followe dby 5 pp. of contemporary responses, 167-188 have selections from Jacons's other writings, followed, up to p.200 by other 19th century passages illustrating her context, the remainder of the work consists of 11 responses, criticism, analyses etc by modern women scholars, finishing with a Chronology and bibliography. As one of the very few ex-slave autobiographies (not that numerous anyway) written by a woman this has naturally attracted much attention from women's history scholars as a highly significant work.
