Como es bien sabido, no es lo mismo… entender cómo se resuelve un problema que ser capaces de resolverlo: mientras que lo primero puede llevarse a cabo en Estadística con unos conocimientos relativamente modestos de cálculo infinitesimal, lo segundo requiere una profunda comprensión de los contenidos teóricos, capacidad de análisis e intuición. Estas habilidades se ejercitan mediante la resolución de problemas, de ahí el objetivo principal del libro. Así, el libro contiene una colección de problemas que se han ido proponiendo como ejercicios de clase o como problemas de examen en las asignaturas de Estadística e Investigación Operativa que se imparten en algunos grados de la Escuela Técnica Superior de Ingeniería de la Universidad de Sevilla, fundamentalmente en el Grado de Ingeniería en Tecnologías Industriales y en el Grado en Ingeniería Aeroespacial. Dichos problemas se han estructurado en capítulos, siguiendo un orden clásico de estudio de la Estadística que comienza por la Teoría de la Probabilidad y continúa por la Inferencia Estadística. Para facilitar su estudio y la notación empleada en los problemas, al principio de cada capítulo se incluye una breve sinopsis de los contenidos teóricos que se requieren para la resolución de dichos problemas. Estos contenidos no son autosuficientes y están pensados como una guía para clases teóricas sobre la materia. En ausencia de dichas clases teóricas, sería necesario acudir a alguno de los muchos libros excelentes sobre Estadística en Ingeniería. A pesar de la estructuración por capítulos, los problemas son incrementales y, por lo general, no es factible abordar un problema de un capítulo sin tener al menos los conocimientos teóricos de los capítulos anteriores. Pensamos que este enfoque incremental es importante porque ayuda a sedimentar conocimientos y a obtener una visión general de la Estadística como herramienta para abordar fenómenos de naturaleza aleatoria. Como ya se ha comentado anteriormente, las colecciones de problemas permiten entrenar las habilidades de modelado y de análisis, pero pueden tener efectos indeseados si se intenta evitar el entrenamiento por un mero estudio de su contenido. En este sentido, la Estadística resulta particularmente engañosa, ya que el modelado de los problemas depende a menudo de hipótesis sutiles que es difícil captar simplemente mediante el estudio de cómo otras personas los han resuelto. Por eso, para aprovechar plenamente el libro, se recomienda primero abordar los problemas de forma autónoma y, en todo caso, emplear la solución para rectificar y/o verificar el enfoque que se ha dado. A estos efectos, los problemas están resueltos de varias formas posibles "aunque seguramente hay formas adicionales de abordarlos" con gran nivel de detalle, y además están clasificados en tres grupos según su dificultad.
