Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - `Are the Great Lakes getting better or worse ' This is the question that the public, scientists and managers are asking the International Joint Commission after a quarter-century of cooperative action by the United States and Canadian governments to clean up the Great Lakes. This volume contains papers from the workshop on Environmental Results, hosted in Windsor, Ontario, by the Great Lakes Science Advisory Board of the International Joint Commission, on September 12 and 13, 1996. The Great Lakes have been through almost a century of severe pollution from the manufacture, use and disposal of chemicals. In the 1960s wildlife biologists started to investigate the outbreaks of reproductive failure in fish-eating birds and ranch mink and to link these to exposure to organochlorine compounds. Human health researchers in the 1980s and 1990s linked growth retardation, behavioral anomalies and deficits in cognitive development with maternal consumption of Great Lakes fish prior to pregnancy. The Great Lakes became the laboratory where the theory of endocrine disruptors was first formulated. Now a group of Great Lakes scientists, hosted by the International Joint Commission, has compiled the story of the trends in the concentrations and effects of persistent toxic substances on wildlife and humans. The technical papers review the suitability of various organisms as indicators, and present the results of long-term monitoring of the concentrations and of the incidence of effects. The evidence shows that there was an enormous improvement in the late 1970s, but that in the late 1990s there are still concentrations of some persistent toxic substances that have stubbornly remained at levels that continue to cause toxicological effects.

Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This collection reviews advances in research on improving barley cultivation across the value chain. Part 1 reviews advances in understanding barley physiology in such areas as plant growth, grain development and plant response to abiotic stress. There is also a review of current developments in mapping the barley genome. Building on this foundation, the second part of the book summarises advances in breeding with chapters on breeding trial design as well as advances in molecular breeding techniques such as genome wide association studies (GWAS) and targeted induced lesions in genomes (TILLING). The book also shows how such techniques have been deployed to develop abiotic stress-resistant varieties. Part 3 looks further along the value chain at ways of optimising cultivation practices. There are chapters on good agricultural practices and post-harvest storage as well as fungal diseases and weeds integrated methods for their management. The final part of the book assesses current research on optimising barley for particular end uses such as malting, brewing and animal feed. With its breadth of coverage and expertise, this will be a standard reference for barley scientists working in universities and other research centres, governments and commercial companies as well as barley growers and processors.

Pemberton in 1948 (first published in 1940).Western fiction is a genre defined by its setting: in the American Old West frontier. The first ever Western novel is often considered to be The Virginian by Owen Wister, published in 1902. From this point on, Westerns, especially Western short stories, gained popularity, especially through the new medium of pulp magazines. The 1940s saw an influx of seminal Western novels, includingThe Ox-Bow Incident by Walter van Tilburg Clark (1940) and The Big Sky by A.B. Guthrie Jr. (1947), which lead to an increased popularity in the genre. In the publisher's original pictorial paperback bindings. Externally, bright, with some shelf wear and edgewear, light staining and a few tidemarks to the rears of the paperback bindings, and light creasing to the spines. Internally, binding is separating from the spine to 'Hair-Trigger Realm'. Remaining binding is firm. Some tidemarks to the title pages of 'The Six-Gun Syndicate' and 'Come A-Smokin'. Pages are lightly age-toned with the odd spot, but are otherwise clean. Good. book.
