The term refers to modifying a classical estimator by moving it closer to a target which could be known a priori or arise from a model. The goal is to construct estimators with improved statistical properties. The book focuses primarily on point and loss estimation of the mean vector of multivariate normal and spherically symmetric distributions. Chapter 1 reviews the statistical and decision theoretic terminology and results that will be used throughout the book. Chapter 2 is concerned with estimating the mean vector of a multivariate normal distribution under quadratic loss from a frequentist perspective. In Chapter 3 the authors take a Bayesian view of shrinkage estimation in the normal setting. Chapter 4 introduces the general classes of spherically and elliptically symmetric distributions. Point and loss estimation for these broad classes are studied in subsequent chapters. In particular, Chapter 5 extends many of the results from Chapters 2 and 3 to spherically and elliptically symmetric distributions. Chapter 6 considers the general linear model with spherically symmetric error distributions when a residual vector is available. Chapter 7 then considers the problem of estimating a location vector which is constrained to lie in a convex set. Much of the chapter is devoted to one of two types of constraint sets, balls and polyhedral cones. In Chapter 8 the authors focus on loss estimation and data-dependent evidence reports. Appendices cover a number of technical topics including weakly differentiable functions; examples where Stein's identity doesn't hold; Stein's lemma and Stokes' theorem for smooth boundaries; harmonic, superharmonic and subharmonic functions; and modified Bessel functions.

Rebound in an imitation morocco cloth binding.This copy includes four facsimile engraved plates by Peter Fourdrinier, two of which, including the frontispiece, are folding plates.This facsimile of the original 1733 handbook focuses on the celebrated springs at Spa (in today's Belgium). It is a piece of medical popularization, an advertising brochure and a capsule history of European "water-cures". Eyre wrote in his capacity as "Purveyor for Mineral Waters to Her Majesty", part of a royal monopoly that let him bottle spa water in Liege and sell it in England. Bound in full morocco. The twelve eclogues [aeglogues] of The Shepheardes Calender's themes such as the abuses of the church, Colin's broken love for Rosalind, praise for Queen Elizabeth, and rustic Shepherd's life, are titled for each of the twelve months of the year. A woodcut comes before each eclogue, and then a motto which outlines the speaker. The opening line of each eclogue expresses the characteristics of the month. The poem describes the seasons and the hard work and the festivals and rituals of the village year. Birds, flowers, and harvests are described by Edmund Spenser as well as the privations and hardship. ***Paul Fourdrinier (1698-1758), also known as Peter or Pierre Fourdrinier, was an eighteenth-century engraver in England, born in the Netherlands. ***The second post-Elizabethan edition. The layout of individual piers in Westminster Abbey is shown.The Life, Times and Work of Paul Fourdrinier :Paul was born in Amsterdam on New Year's Eve 1698. His father was Jacques Fourdrinier and his mother was Jeanne Theroude and both were Huguenots. Jeanne had been deported from France to England in 1688 and we do not know how she met Jacques or got to The Netherlands, but there was a Pierre Fourdrinier deported to England at the same time as the Theroudes. Paul Fourdrinier was apprenticed to Bernard Picart, one of the greatest engravers of his age, about 1714 and then emigrated to London with his parents and brother Benjamin in 1720.His apprenticeship had stood him in good stead as he was immediately commissioned by Jacob Tonson, a prominent publisher, to develop about 100 engravings for John Dryden's Works of Virgil.From here he went on to work on Milton's Paradise Lost, and then fell in with the 3rd Earl of Burlington and his close associates William Kent and Isaac Ware. These were the leading advocates for Palladian Neoclassical architecture, a movement which superceded the Baroque and earlier styles and influenced many public buildings in the UK, France and the USA. Burlington was wealthy and spent liberally on his crusade to bring Neoclassical design into England. He published and supported a number of important books, most of which were illustrated by Paul Fourdrinier.Paul had married Susanna Grolleau, the daughter of a Cloth Dealer who had migrated to England from France around 1680 and who in 1686 married Marie Dufay, another deportee who came to England in probably the same ship as Jeanne Theroude. . Paul and Susanna had eight children of whom three died fairly young. He set up shop in 1731 on the corner of Craig's Court and Whitehall in London; this shop continued in the family until about 1810. One of his grandchildren was the mother of Henry Cardinal Newman and two of his grandchildren became famous for developing the Fourdrinier Paper Making machine. .Paul's printmaking career involved him in the building of the first Westminster Bridge, Houghton Hall, the splendid Palladian home of Robert Walpole, England's first Prime Minister, the Georgian City of Bath, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, The Foundling Hospital and many more great projects of the century.He died in 1758 and is buried with his wife and some of his children in the Grolleau family grave in the Huguenot Cemetery in Wandsworth, a London suburb.
