These stories prompted more ambitious experiments during World War I and after, as represented by Lawrence's rivalry with Nietzsche in Women in Love and in the fiction up to The Plumed Serpent; and by Malraux's most striking initiatives in Man's Fate and The Walnut Trees of the Altenburg.
