An examination of the economic and agricultural state of Ireland, based on information gathered during a five-months' tour undertaken in 1845-46 and first published serially in The Times newspaper. Foster attributes Irish distress and misery to the lack of industry among the people of Ireland rather than on British rule or even the neglect of the Irish landlords.
