The 1959 Bugle Notes is a small, pocket-sized hardbound handbook issued to first?year cadets as their essential reference for *plebe knowledge,* including West Point and Army history, customs, rank insignia, songs, and key quotations that plebes are expected to memorize. It is often called the plebe *bible* because it concentrates the rules, traditions, and required facts that shape a new cadet?s daily life and initiation into the Corps. Bugle Notes began in the early 20th century as the standardized handbook for the United States Corps of Cadets and was firmly established by the 1930s as a pocket manual on customs, the honor system, and songs. Over the decades it has come to be described as *the story of the Long Gray Line,* and it continues to be produced for each new class, so the 1959 edition stands as one link in a continuous tradition of plebe handbooks at West Point.
