While Burgess 'says Stanhope Forbes is the best man coming on & that he has painted some very good portraits', from what Long himself remembers of his work, it seems 'very black'. Rene-Theophile-Hyacinthe Laennec (1781-1826) invented the stethoscope in 1816 and pioneered its use in diagnosing various chest conditions (see Plate VIII at rear). He also researched the skin tumors we know as melanomas, described the role that organ tissues play in disease, and named the liver disease called cirrhosis. Ironically, despite his research into tuberculosis, he died of the disease himself at the age of 45.…
