Signed by Max Liebermann (1847-1935) the German-Jewish impressionist painter and printmaker who created 21 fine lithographs for the book. Three of his illustrations are full page, and the first "Effi auf der Schaukel" (Effie on the Swing) is signed in pencil. Published as the annual gift for the members of the Maximilian-Gesellschaft, the association of German bibliophiles. . Housed in the original hard paper folder. Bookplate on pastedown. Ausdrucksstarkes Altersportrait, Fontane starb kurze Zeit später im September 1898. Oberer Rand leicht unregelmäßig beschnitten (wohl von früherer Rahmung).
